Hey guys, last night I stumbled across the debate of “does the tailgate have an 85lbs weight limit?” , and it got me thinking.
I have a stock spare on my JL unlimited sport, with a 48” Hi-Lift Jack mounted to the tailgate hinge. I don’t have any reinforcements, simply because I never thought I’d be coming up on a weight limit until last night. With running a stock spare, and the jack Mount basically being right next to the hinge, is there really reason to be concerned about the weight limit? I can’t really find firm numbers on how much the stock tire weights for a JLUS. Has anyone run this set up (stock spare and hinge mounted jack without reinforcements)? If so did you have any issues?
Side note: has anyone actually confirmed with someone at Jeep that the 85lbs limits is talking about the tailgate itself? When reading the manual this 85lbs note is in the section that’s talking about spare tires and specifically mentions the tire carrier and not the tailgate itself.
