I just cancelled an Ace rock rail order due to fear of broken bolts. That said they met all but my first requirement:

  • Does NOT bolt to the three body bolt locations
  • Covers pinch seam - or - leaves stock Rubicon rock rails in place
  • Sticks out enough to use as makeshift step and to ward off door dings
  • Robust finish
  • High quality product
  • Price is not really a consideration (well, I won't pay $2,000)
  • Available for 4-door (doubt that this is a problem)
  • No drilling required.

Breaking a body bolt. I've read a lot of threads and even folks that follow all of the best practices seem to fall victim. I'm sure that the odds are in my favor, but I don't feel lucky. I may change my mind if I get a little braver.

LOD makes a great product. The signature series doesn't cover the pinch seam though. You do not have to remove the body bolts but they do use the smaller bolts to either side of the body bolts, no drilling required but is optional for increased strength. I just ordered the Destroyer series for my 2020 JLUR. I have had the Signatures on my last 3 builds so I decided to switch it up a bit this time.

I just installed a set of roam step rails today and I'm happy with them. If they rust, I'll paint them, I'm not all that worried about it.

I just installed the LOD Destroyer sliders yesterday. The instructions mention loosening the 2 rear body mounts to help with passing the slider bracket past the big washer, but a little wiggling and a second set of hands helped me avoid that. It meets every one of your wants, except for the 3 optional drill points for increased strength for more extreme use.

If you'd like any specific pics, feel free to ask.

I also got them from Northridge 4x4 and got a discount with the forum code.

Don’t meet your requirements but the Metalcloak ones are awesome. They mount to the pinch seam and tub. They are the same ones brit and Kevin run with stepchild and they use and abuse them. They are incredible strong, don’t use the body bolts and work great

Your fears are so noted.... I purchased 2 sets in Aug 2018 for JLR and JLUR. I did have an issue and it the impact tool is the issue. Just use a good racket set with a 36 inch breaking bar and you will do fine. I did use the impact tool to put them back on...

Go get the ACE and you will be ok. I have the touchup paint and have not needed to use it...

I ordered the ACE rock rails. I'll go into the body bolt removal with my eyes wide open and fingers crossed. The ONLY downer for me is the bolt removal and that's a one time event.

metalcloak for the win.
pinch seam plus
Enough for a small step
Tough
Looks good
Does call for 2 extra drilled holes on the pinch seam. Probably get away without
