Help Me With Maintenance

2018 JLU

I’ve got 20k on the clock now. I’ve been changing the engine oil and rotating tires every 5k miles.

I want to do as much basic maintenance as I can without the dealer, but I’m not sure what else I should really be looking at hard at this point.


Apparently I lost my owners manual so I’m asking for guidance from the forum. I’m not mechanically inclined, and I only have basic tools.


I’m ready for your advice.

I would change the differential fluids, transfer case fluid. I would also change the transmission fluid, if it’s a manual, around 30k miles.

I believe there are complete owners manuals online and you can order a new one to replace what you lost.

I did change the cabin air filter at 20k, and I have to say that was a show trying to find the right filter at Auto Zone. Even the associates were scratching their heads.

Thanks. Yes it is a manual, so I’ll consider changing those fluids at 30k. Is the diff fluid change a hard one? I’ve changed the transmission fluid in my 87 YJ but I imagine that was a lot easier to get to, etc.

Diff fluid changes are easy. Drain and refill until the fluid starts pouring out the fill plug. Transfer case is the same procedure. I do suggest getting a fluid pump to make the job easier.

There's no harm in changing the diff/transfer case/trans fluids. I honestly will do one at 15k and then probably every 20k after. Especially if you wheel a lot you might as well just change it.

Not at all. My friend who builds axles for custom rigs suggests changing the fluid between 500-2000 miles. After the initial drain, you can go much longer (30-50k).

Did the Diffs and T-case on my Rubicon this weekend at 1100 miles, lots of pearl in the rear diff and T-case. Also some paste on both drain magnets on the diffs. I'll change them again at 5000 or so and should be good after that.
Oh, nice having the clearance underneath, didnt even have to jack it up.

If someone has a lot of money/time to burn, do what makes you feel good. The owner's manual is not overly conservative but is conservative, no need to go beyond what it says. Consider that the vast majority of cars you see driving around, especially the older ones, have never had that kind of maintenance and they don't know the difference.

38's on a 2" lift here, and definitely nice plus to be able to slide right under with a creeper. Might need a lift kit on the creeper when i bump the Jeep up to 3.5". Lol
