I have a 2 door Sport with stock wheels. Will I be happy with 285/75r17 or do I need to spend twice as much and get new 17x8.5 wheels and full 35x12.5x17s. I mostly drive on the road but like to drive trails in the desert and decided I like the Falken Wildpeak A/T which comes in both sizes.

Middle of the road would be to get some wheel spacers (good ones) and a 315 size possibly.

Look for rubi wheel/tire takeoffs for what you’d pay for just new tires?

Just ask @cosine he knows!
I'd either go w/ the Rubi takeoffs or the 285/75/17 set w/ your stock wheels. The 34" height of the 285/75s won't tax your Sport gearing as much as a true 35. Also the narrower 285 is a better fit on the stock wheels w/ that +44 offset. You've got a nice lift and those 285/75s are a great size. I run 295/70/17s but will probably go to that 285/75 when the time comes. I won't run over 34" tall since re-gearing isn't in the budget :(

The Toyo Open Country AT3 is what I'm planning to run, they have a 50k mileage warranty, are C-rated and have had Toyos in the past w/ good results. They are priced pretty good @ $240 per and are available in that 285/75/17.

That's the only downside w/ that 285/75, not a large selection of tires vs a 315/70 or 35x12.5

Karl,

Everyone has to follow their own idea of what works for their rig. Your build deserves your own touch, given your own desires and budget. However the more feedback provided, the easier it is to help you visualize what you're after. Good luck and have fun with this.

Word of warning; this may not be easy because there are so many way cool wheel / tire / lift combinations that it may just seem overwhelming.

I just recently completed my lift / wheel / tire build. I decided up-front to do what would give me the greatest on/off-road capability for my Sport S. If I was wealthy enough to have purchased a Rubi, I may have done something different (but most probably not, I'd have done the exact same thing). However, since my rig only has the M186 / M210 open diffs with a 3.45 gear ratio, 35's are the biggest tire I'd consider. So I went with an All Terrain 35" tire. My JL is after all my everyday driver. Unfortunately the width of the tire required a wider 9" wheel.

My build (so far):
1. Mopar 2.5" lift. Decided on this lift to steer well clear of warranty concerns (pun intended).
2. Fuel Ammo Anthracite 17x9 (-12mm offset) wheels.
3. Goodyear 35x12.5x17 Duratrac Wrangler All-Terrains. This was my only real tough decision. But very glad I did. I'm really liking this rubber.
4. Mopar Tailgate Large Tire Carrier. This was a necessity.

Have fun deciding your own preferences. Here are the results of my choices:

Starting with stock, followed by my current (well liked) setup. Hope your Jeep ends up giving you as big a smile.

Jay

315s all the way! You'll regret anything smaller. You'll eventually get there so why not do it now and get it over with instead of buying stuff you'll take off later.

I'm not a fan of wheel spacers so I recommend wheels with around 0 offset. I only have a spacer lift but I'm very happy with my wheel/tire setup.

My concerns exactly. A lot of weight and stress on the stock gearing and even on the spare carrier.

Nice pictures. I really like your look and hope mine eventually looks that nice.

Only you can answer the question what you would be happy with. I changed my tires and wheels on my Sport S. I hate flat faced wheels and all vehicles now come with flat faced wheels. I'm a bit old school. I like a deeper dished wheel with some depth to it.. The Sport S wheels are just fugly, in my opinion.

What wheels and tires are you running now?

Wheels are Fuel Podium 17 x 9 w/ +1 offset
Tires are BFG KO2’s 285/70R17

Wheels are a very personal choice. I looked thru many pictures and when I saw these I knew what I wanted. I stayed with the Rubicon stock tire size on my Sport S. Wanted to keep the daily drive ability with the V-6 and 8 speed auto.
