Went off-roading with a local Jeep Club today (A LOUD shout out to Scottsdale Family Jeepers!) and tackled the Black Canyon City Overlook trail today (Trail #36 in the Guide to Arizona Backroads & 4-Wheel-Drive Trails book aka FunTreks publications). Took a 4" cut through the sidewall of the rear, driver side tire on the return leg of the trip. Nothing like having 10 people descend upon you offering assistance in changing a tire while on the trail! Gives meaning to the old phrase "many hands make light work"! I was rolling again within 20 minutes of observing the problem.

Question: Does new vehicle warranty cover replacement? Some of the guys I was wheeling with today seemed to think so. Personally, I have no idea, but if so, it would be nice.

Lesson learned: watch the trail a bit more carefully and ALWAYS take new trails with others.

Despite the wrecked tire . . . The outing was a fantastic and Jeep people are the GREATEST!

If you have road hazard coverage on that tire, then yes. Otherwise, no. Tires aren’t covered by any warranty except for factory defects. That’s clearly damage from an external source.

Glad you had a blast in spite of it though.

That’s kinda what I thought. It wouldn’t have been as much fun had I not been out with a group. It would have taken me a considerably longer time to get that tire changed out on the trail!

Looks like you had to much fun! Glad there were others to help! For me i think i will buy the discount tire warranty for stuff like this.. They will either fix or replace the tire if they cant fix it! Give them a call anyway and see what they can do for you..

By the way, were you aired down when this happened??? What PSI did you air down to??

I think if you air down low enough, stuff like this simply doesn't happen because the tire will mold over sharp rocks sticks etc

I've been buying Tires from Discount for 35 years! I will undoubtedly be buying more, perhaps sooner rather than later, and yes, getting the certificates for unquestioned replacement is always the protocol for me. The last tire I had replaced was for my wife's Lincoln MKX that had a similar cut sidewall back in February when I was out at CowTown Range.

I was air'd down to 18 psi . . .

thats definitely not true. I’ve shredded a bunch of tires between my talon and multiple jeeps at beadlock pressures

Update: Went to Discount Tire and had two new tires installed. In addition to the tire shown in the initial post, the opposite side tire also had a cut through the rubber, but had not gone through the side plys. I also purchased certificates for the remaining tires, so hopefully, no further tire expenses for a while.

I contacted Jeep Wave and was told that the program only covers tire rotations and oil changes . . . no consideration given to tire damage. A very polite, but quick conversation. It was worth a shot, but no help with replacement.
