I was not referring to all of Jeep’s transfer cases. The old NV242 was chain driven and reliable. You cannot compare them just because Jeep uses the same marketing name. I was only referring to the clutch pack based transfer cases that are known to be troublesomeIt is the same in terms of the settings, though, and I was responding to the comment that they've always been troublesome. They have not, at least in my own experience and knowledge of others with both older and newer Cherokees and Grand Cherokees.
So you get argumentative because you think a phrase I used means something else entirely, and then you double down on an argument that has nothing to do with with anything.Aldo is arguing that selectability is the distinction and is the reason he called me out. I used AWD instead of writing out full time 4 wheel drive in an above post. Functionally the setting are the same. So when someone uses the term “ for the record” or other “l’m smarter than you“ BS terms I tend to double down on my point that the FUNCTION is the same. But hey, let’s add another bit of confusion To argue about. Y’all argue about the WK2 selectable dial between auto, sand rock and low. Meanwhile I’m going wheeling in Uwharrie.
No, the distinguishing characteristic of 4WD over AWD is the ability to engage part-time 4WD, 4-Lo in particular. So if I'm understanding correctly, the new BMW M5 is a 4WD rig, not AWD, because you're able to select 2WD mode? Bet it looks sick with 35's.
Ok so having 4-lo is what separates 4WD from AWD?No, the distinguishing characteristic of 4WD over AWD is the ability to engage part-time 4WD, 4-Lo in particular.
See? It doesn’t take much for some to get lost...
Let’s say “yes” for simplicity.Ok so having 4-lo is what separates 4WD from AWD?
Let’s say “yes” for simplicity.
@DanW posted a video above that shows the key differences between the two.
Actually, it was @Bearded_Dragon that posted it. Great video!Let’s say “yes” for simplicity.

I still wish I would not have ordered it, but am leaning towards just accepting that I did. I like durability, and I feel like the transfer case especially will be weaker. Also not a fan of CV boots, not so much the CV itself.OP are you able to sleep now? or did it get worse?
Yes. My understanding is that ALL JLs have a FAD, regardless of trim or 4WD system.Does the ALL WHEEL DRIVE optioned transfer case still have a FAD?
That’s a good point. My experience with full time 4wd is with the Hummer H2 and H3 (adventure with e-lockers).
The H3 might be the closest comparison to the JLU in size/weight, it's a beast in the rain and snow. I honestly can't think of anything I ever drove that felt more planted on ice/snow/rain covered roads.
I would stay with the full time AWD.
