Would a thin felt gasket under the hardtop help where it meets the Jeep? I feel like my noises are coming from the area where the 3 dolts are on each side.

Hello, I know this post is a bit old but I recently got my JL and I'm having the same issue with the crackling noises coming from the rear hardtop where the 3 screws meet with the Jeep. I checked all screws and they all seem to be tight enough by hand and I live in South Florida so cold weather is definitely not a thing here. I was wondering if you or anyone else was able to come up with a solution.

I had the same problem. It's the rear window and seal that's the culprit. I tried silicon lube first. That didn't help. I read in another thread to use dish soap. Surprisingly, the dish soap worked. It's silent now. One application lasted about a month. I can hear the creaks starting to come back. I'll need to reapply.

I did the cheapest lube from the local auto store. I lubed where the tailgate and rear glass window meet. Roughly the whole black rubber makes contact with the tailgate door. That worked for me!

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't have this trouble last year or all winter. As soon as it started getting warm out this spring it started.

Same thing here with me as GlockJeeper. Was fine all winter until the warmer weather hit and before I took the top off. Iā€™m guessing itā€™s the seals drying out a little. Gonna try the soap fix.

I tried the soap fix today didn't work for me so I'm on to the lube next. Might try the vasaline next as that's in the house. I'll let you know the results. Didn't have this last year just started after I switched the tops for the colder weather.

Wow ... thanks

This is JL #2, the first was a soft top and no noise

We live on a rural one lane gravel road and were surprised how much noise the top kept out except on back roads and the squawking actually made the hard top noisier at low speeds on any uneven surface

The new to us JL has about 7000 city, garage kept miles and when I just went out and opened the tailgate the surface where the rear window and tailgate met actually had a thin, black tarry looking line on the tailgate where I assume the rubber had "set up" on the paint of the tailgate

We daily drive ours and the first time we opened the back glass to pull the rear seat out it acted as if it had never been opened

So I cleaned the tailgate surface and armor alled the rubber seal, a quick run down the driveway and out our road showed the squawk to be gone

Thanks again:like:

You be better off saving the lube for something more fun. All joking aside jeeps are terrible for noise. I have a brand new 2020 and it creaks like the walking dead. For me it gets worse in the cold as the fiberglass is less flexible. When itā€™s warmer I have less noise. Also the hard plastic around the roll bars shifts and moves.
Bottom line if you want a less noisy motor donā€™t buy a Jeep they are crap when it comes to noise but great in every other way.

Hi Kate I already had my Jeep into 2 different dealerships to fix a rattle in the dashboard that took me 2 months in and out many times to get fixed. The first dealership had the nerve to tell me you have a Jeep get used to rattles. Brand new Jeep and thatā€™s what I was told, horrible service. The second dealership fixed the rattle and were professional about it. That was a bad rattling sound so hats off to them for fixing it.

Creaking sounds on the other hand which is what my last response was about is a problem with every Jeep I have been in. My thoughts are why spend months trying to track down creaking sounds. I feel thatā€™s jeeps responsibility to make a Jeep hardtop that is sound proofed and not open fiberglass.

I just added a rhino rack to my hardtop so bringing it in to a dealership now I know the answer I would get. ā€œCreaking is because of your rack, we canā€™t do anythingā€.

Happy to reach out to you directly if you feel you can help ?

My 2010 JKUR Creaked and my 2018 JLUR does the exact same thing. The only thing I have found to provide temporary relief is lithium grease on the seals. Hopefully in addition to silencing the noise I'm adding to the life of the seals. My personal opinion is that it's a jeep thing and the small cost of having a removable top.

Unfortunately, eman20, I cannot guarantee any certain outcome here, I do apologize. That said, if you are currently experiencing a concern, we would be happy to connect you with a specialist who can work with you and a dealer during repairs. Let us know.
