Back in the mid 90s I wore a suit and tie and HATED IT so one day enough is enough and I said I ain't wearing it anymore. I was a consultant and thought I am being hired for what I know and can do. I used head hunters to find my jobs.Someone has to say it, Suits should not be worn in Jeeps, especially 2 doors!
That having been said, I don't really see anyone wearing them anymore except at the courthouse.
So the first time I decided to show up sans suit, I shocked them...to say the least.
They called me for an interview and said we want to you to lunch. Sure, see you at noon on Friday.
Well, Friday I was riding down to San Antonio on my Harley.
I show up with my Harley boots, jeans with holes in the knees (Aug in Texas and the holes in our knees are to let air in as you ride). Harley Jacket, no sleeves, no shirt under it.
I go into the Office entrance and the Gal at the desk holds up her hands and says don't rob us we have any money here. I laugh and said I have a interview with the CEO.
Are you in the right office? YEP!
She calls they all came out, I see the shock on the faces. LOL and we go to lunch and local joint there in Dallas.
I got the CEO, COO, VP of Marketing, Acting CTO, Director of Software Engineering and Networking, VP of Personnel and the VP of FINANCE!
They pepper me with questions, mostly by the Acting CTO and Director of
, VP of Personnel and the VP of FINANCE!
Everyone seem happy and like me...untill the VP of Finance (CPA) leans across the table for the fist time to speak and he says this: We expected someone to show in a suit and tie and a white shirt ready to go to work.
"Well, Pilgrim, if you want a suit and tie and a white shirt, then I suggest you go to some IT hiring fair and get ya a white shirt boy because there will be a room full of them"...what they will not deliver I can and I will, world-class IT and don't if I get my shirt dirty in the process. Oh and the folks who work for me, which is most of the company unless they meet with clients they wear T-shirts, jeans, and tennis shoes.
CEO, looks at me and looks at the Finance guy,-Mr CPA and then looks back at me and says can you go work on Monday?
No I riding down to San Antonio for some time off and be back on Wed and call you and let you know.
I ended up turning them down, I knew Mr CPA was going to be a problem.
I ended a few weeks later consulting for Bell Labs in New Jersey...LOL they also offered me a job but I told them not in New Jersey, I am a Texas boy.
