Had my steering damper replaced today.

I just picked mine up. Correctly installed thankfully. I was very hesitant to have it done. I never thought my steering was bad, I was more than happy with it. It has definitely decreased bump steer and tightened up any dead spot.

We took my daughter's 2018 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in to get the recall done. She never had a problem with the steering or any shaking issues, however, right after they did the work she took it onto the highway and it started shaking very badly as soon as she hit 65. We took it back the next day and they claimed that they test drove it and it was fine, and they were careful to say that nothing they did during the recall fix would have created that situation. However, when we got the car back the issue had disappeared. I think they messed up the damper replacement and did not want to admit it. BTW, we had the work done at Scap Jeep in Fairfield CT and they have been absolutely awful to deal with thus far.

I’ve had the damper replaced earlier (about 8 months ago) because there were bad batches of dampers. The bad ones had a number and if your number was < than like 251 it had to be replaced. Anyway, I had that done and my steering bounces still. I got a letter in the mail telling me to have it replaced. I called the dealer and told them I got a letter, they said “Oh, you’re good because it has already been replaced”. Does this recall supersede the previous replacement?

Agree this is weird. My little dealership here has multiple of them.

I scheduled a service, they took it in - then they give it back without service and claimed it's on back order. It was a month ago. Still no word from them. (NJ)

How would you grade the shop according to this photo?

I'd say they are 50/50. There are only two ways to install it so they have a 50 percent chance of getting it right. Unless they are a trained Jeep tech or able to read installation instruction. Maybe they should put an arrow right on the part itself showing which way to install it.

Mine came from the factory just like this. I just noticed it a couple weeks ago and have been wondering about it. I just havent looked into it with all the other things going wrong with my steering lately. Seeing as how it's a damper in both directions, what difference does it make? Is there an oil reservoir? Im about to replace almost all the CRAP original steering components (except steering box [ugh] for now) and going to dual stabilizers anyway. Just wondering what the difference is. I fell for the 60k extended warranty ( I have 56k now), which seems useless unless either a) I want OEM plastic ball joints and swing-set grade drag link/ tie rod put back in and b) I want to bring it back to the dealer XXX number of times until its actually repaired, if ever. If I sound disgusted, it's because I am--with the quality of the steering components and the incredulously awful service provided by my dealer. On the plus side, I am happy with everything else.
