GRMS Radios which is best BTECH 50 watt or Midland 40 watt?

I'm mounting the KG-1000G mobile radio this weekend. I usually bring my KG-935G handheld (with its charger) when I'm wheeling or overlanding.

Does this work fine from inside the Jeep? I'm just looking for a GMRS radio for trail runs.

I've wired up plenty of CBs and antennas in Jeeps, but if a handheld works well enough, I'd rather just do that.

We can get strung out by a mile or so, but usually not much more than that.

Its for the KG-1000G.

I bought the KG-935G for those times when I'm not in the Jeep, or if I'm in the Jeep and. need a spotter.

I just mounted the Wouxun KG-1000G to the console, on the passenger side.

At some point I want to mount the radio under the driver's seat, and the head unit...well...not sure yet.

The Wouxun 1/4 wave antenna didn't work out for me, since it requires a ground plane, and I measured SWR at 1.86. I ended up keeping the 1/2 wave NGP antenna, with its SWR of 1.40.

Dumb question: How many inches is a 1/2 wave GRMS antenna?

If I mount it on my front bull bar does it need a ground pane or will the hood act as a ground plane?
I see some guys mounting them even on the side-near the rear of the front hood.

My 1/2 wave is under a foot and no ground plane required (NGP), whereas my 1/4 wave is over two feet and requires a ground plane.

It was a no brainer for me. I plan to move the 1/2 NGP antenna to the inside of the Jeep.
