I’m new to GMRS. Have my license and a midland MXT 275.
What is the call button on the radio?
what is a “call alert tone” that I can set in the menu?

THANKS!

Not helpful. Yes. Read the manual. Press call to send a call signal. What is a call signal. Why would you send one.

Again. Newbie. Making fun, not helpful.

Just if you want to get someone’s attention mine makes a ring like tone for about 4 seconds. I don’t think anyone uses it except when they hit it by accident.

generally when I hear a call it's followed by a very demanding toddler

There isn't a lot of clear information out there on the gmrs call function of most radios in terms of how/when to use within the community.

I've never been exposed to much community guidelines around it other than all the groups I've ran with in the past never use it lol.

I still go through the motions of providing an ID and asking if a channel is open before starting any significant conversations, etc... sometimes you'll get a troll and/or 5yr old on the other end, but it's easy enough to just move on and/or use a privacy code 😉

A lot of the handhelds have that and it is kinda useless. I also have a Midland MXT400 in my Jeep and I don't think it even has the call tones. The only time I ever hear call tones being used are kids using the handhelds.

Thanks all.
I get the privacy channels. Those make sense based on manual and vids.

the repeaters are set using a privacy channel correct? So the owner of the repeater needs to tell you what privacy channel to use and that’s how they authorize you to use it?

also do people like, hate, don’t care, about roger beeps?

I hate the call tones, wish I could disable it both from me sending it and receiving it. I also don't like the roger beeps. Roger beeps aren't as bad as the calls, but it's disabled on all of my radios.

I'll also go ahead and say I dislike the term "privacy code" because I feel like the code is exactly the opposite of that. It only filters out what you hear, but anyone can still listen in on you. That being said, I don't have a suggestion for what else to call those codes. "Filter code" maybe?

basically. You can find them on mygmrs.com some want money from you before they'll give you their codes/permission to use. I believe that the MXT275 does not support split tones, so any repeater that transmits with one tone and receives with the other is not going to work for you.
