Well it's 19'F up here in the north east, so I said, why not let the dealer do an oil change, after all its FREE with my new Jeep JL. And here's what you get for free.....There was more oil on the motor and undercarriage then was removed...I knew I smelled something cooking on my way to work this morning....In the defense of the service manager, he did say to bring it in and they would clean it up. I sent him the pictures and told him to bust chops on the tech who did the job, poor workmanship to say the least.

Yep. Those free oil change are more expensive than doing it yourself. 6 qts instead of 5, wrong viscosity, and oil all over your rig seem pretty common. You got what you paid for.

I asked the service manager to ensure they don't put more than 5qts, guess what's on the paperwork....but I checked the dipstick, looks ok, it's right at the top.

It’s utterly ridiculous this is acceptable to them. Plain and simple.

@Jamied,

I've let the dealership perform one free oil change. Got home and checked the level. Yep six quarts, oil was about a quarter inch up the cable. I then personally drained and filled with Mobil 1 Advanced Protection, exactly five quarts. Dipstick now reads at the top of the full mark. Nothing on the cable.

I've since performed three more oil changes in my garage. Easy peasy, lemon squeezy. Oil and air filters are very simple as well. No spills, no screwups, just the pleasure of knowing it's done right.

I'll perhaps let the dealer drain and fill the differentials but even then I'll be squeemish. However, never again will they change my engine oil. Not going to happen.

I've done the differentials, easier than engine oil changes.

Yeah, I'm going to bypass the free oil changes - just an unnecessary risk. It's a sad commentary when you worry about the dealer service dept. making more problems than they solve. 😔

Yep - took mine in for the first service last month...about 10 ounces overfilled. The undercarriage was a mess. Lesson learned.

In my case the tech didn’t tighten the oil filter cap on my first “free” change. However much oil they did put in was blown out all over the engine bay by the time I got home. The service manager sent their head guy out to my house, refilled it in the driveway, took it back to the dealership and steam cleaned it, then delivered it back to my driveway. They made it good, but that was the last time they had anything to do with the fluids; I do it all myself now.

Jeeps are so trouble-free, dealers have to create them.

Yeah, the 6th quart is all over the jeep and driveway. I very happily walked away from my allotted freebies.

Anytime I read anything about oil changes and dealerships on this forum it just reinforces my belief in doing ALL my own maintenance.
