Getter ready to order new wheels and tires but I'm questioning myself again

I have it narrowed down to two different wheels and on BFG AT K02's or possibly Duratracs. My Jeep is a 6 speed and is mostly used on the road so I do not want my choice to make it less fun on the road. I also do not plan on lifting the Jeep so I don't want to get a set of wheels and tires and then think it doesn't look right so I need to lift it. My plan is to go with 255/75R17 because it's slightly larger but it doesn't seem like it's enough to make a difference in on-road drivability. I had 33/12.50 and 33/1050's on my TJ and it seemed like it just drove better on the 10.50s.

My two wheel choices are the Motegi MR149 MT6, they weigh 25.85 and are about $7 more per wheel

My next choice is the Motegi MR150 Trailite, 24.6 pounds

My dilemma now is both wheels are 8.5" wide and while it is within the recommended range for the tires I have picked it may be a little wide for those tires.


The wheels are available with 0 and +18 backspacing and I want them to stay even with the flares so I'm planning pon going with +18.


1) I don't plan on doing any off roading that requires much airing down and I know that would be a concern with the wider wheels and 10" wide sites but are there any other concerns?

2) I'm leaning towards the MR150 but which do you think looks better? I can't seem to find any pictures of these on Jeeps but there are tons of them on Taco's in this thread

Have you looked at the MOPAR beed locks? Look great and can be ran with the trim ring in non beed lock form.

I like those but I'm pretty sure they are way out of my budget. I chose the Motegi's because they are lightweight which will be easier for my 6-speed with 3.45 gears to push and they both come in at around $170

I understand. I rolled everything into the price financing, that way not to much pain.

I like those wheels and if I had a Rubicon I would probably be a little more excited about the beadlock's but I really want to keep this Jeep as a light-duty off-roader. I ended up dumping about $6000 into off-road accessories for my TJ and I don't want to go back down that road. If that bug hits again I'll be trading for a Rubicon but right now this is an on-road rig that has some light trail/fire road ability.

Why not just stick with stock wheel? The stock wheels are very light. Could always powder coat them to the color of your choosing. I got 34’s and powder coated mine black

Mostly just to be different. There are several white JLU Sport with the same wheels running around my area.

I really like those rims. They remind me of AEV Salta wheels at a much nicer price. Another suggestion regarding tires:

What about bumping up the size to a 285/70/R17? It would give you a bit more of an aggressive look.

You can get that size in an LT load range C in the KO2 or Falken Wildpeak AT3s (falkens appear quite heavy) - both come from the factory on Rubicons.

Instead you could go with that same size in a P metric Falken Wildpeaks AT3 for roughly the same price and weight as the 255 KO2.

The only reason I know this is because I’m currently shopping around for tires for my JK

I am considering it but with my 6-speed and 3.45 gears I'm afraid of what it will do to the on road performance. My TJ was a 4 cyl with 4.88 gears and I felt there was a pretty big difference between 10.50's and 12.50s. MPGs, acceleration, highway speeds and bad road performance were all negatively effected by the wider tires. It looks like going to 285 is about a 25lb jump in weight from my currant set up.

Have you looked at the wheels on the 392 Wrangler coming out? Those will be for sell for a great price as everyone will be selling them to move up to new wheels and tires.

Get a throttle response controller. I have the same setup (6-speed and 3.45 gears) and just installed the Hike It for $175.00. I am now convinced that I can move up to the 34" world with no issues. I can even use 5th gear with no issues (6th is still a distant dream).
