He’s probably going to kill me for this…..he’s very busy, but if you’re near roseburg or don’t mind traveling Lenny at Kilter Performance is really good. He does everything including full custom and V8 swaps.

The blue one he just did for a friend of mine, and the gray on is Lennys. He did my 5.13s and I’ve put 30k on them since and no issues.

Yes. I’m nervous about that. There’s a fantastic shop near my brother’s home in Colorado, but I don’t know of any shop in Oregon I have full confidence in. The problem with doing the gears at a remote shop is there’s a break-in process/period, which means I won’t be wheeling the next day — which is part of the fun of visiting my brother in Colorado.
I always get a little confused about the "break-in process", it shouldn't be any different than breaking in the new vehicle if they're set up right. Maybe I'm missing something. I'm in the market for a 4.56 regear.

@Whaler27 and @Cptnhindsight , another option is coming North to Northride4x4 on the West side of the Sound. They’re on the forums and can walk you through how to plan your break-in and return home effectively.
Thank you. Northridge is about 6-7 hours away, depending on weather and traffic. Do you guys have to pay the ~10% sales tax on labor up there, or just the parts? (I had a bag break on a motorcycle trip, so I diverted into Seattle. The bag was $350 at Ride West BMW, and they wouldn’t exempt Oregon residents as many businesses would, so it was going to cost $35 less if I could hold it together until Portland. Being the cheap grump I am, I used half a roll of duct tape to get me to Portland and bought the bag there.)

Thank you. Looks great. Glide, just east of Roseburg, was home until about 22 years ago. How long did your regear take? In and out in one day?

Good question. I don’t know why it isn’t recommended when the Jeep is new/delivered, but the gear manufacturers recommend a break-in period with running/heating/cooling cycles followed by changing the differential oil at 500 miles.

Honestly, I don’t know. I’m a transplant so I’m still getting to know taxes here. It looks like it does though.

37's, Auto, ,V6, stock 410 gears. I don't have any issues around town but it would be nicer to have lower gearing when we are in the mountains. It's not a necessity but it would make it a bit easier to pass the tourists in motorhomes. No issues with the setup for the off-roading we do. I don't know if we'll ever bother re-gearing, I'd spend the money on other mods for the time being.

Yes. He said he wanted it all day, but was done in about 4 hours.

Copy. I’ll look into the Oregon solution.

I have never read where anyone has said they regret gearing too low, always the opposite (not gearing low enough). Put me in that camp--I re-geared to 4.88 initially and should have re-geared to 5.13.

I recently remedied that issue by re-gearing to 5.13.

I debated 5.13 vs 4.88 for awhile in my 37" tire, 2.0T, auto tranny JLUR. Ultimately decided on 4.88 and don't regret it. My primary reason was the thin head of the pinion on the 5.13. I didn't want that to be the weak link. Additionally, I liked the gear ratios with the 4.88's. My JLUR is pretty heavy and still averages 16.5 mpg.

I ran 4.10's for awhile with the 37's and it was ok and was getting about 15-15.5 mpg. Didn't like having 4.10's off road, even in 4 low, and it lost passing power in the mountains. I lost 8th gear unless I was going down hill or on flat ground, and there's not a lot of flat roads in Northern Nevada, 4.88's hold 8th gear very well and I have plenty of power for passing, even going up mountain passes. I'm sure I would've like 5.13's, but have no plans for going with bigger tires for now. The only way I'll go above 37's is with D60's.

I did go with Dana Advantek gear sets and had no abnormal noises or install issues. Seems some who used other brand gear sets have had problems.

I think both have 8 teeth on the pinion head, so I assumed similar strength. I hear you though, I’m going 4.56 on my new Jeep until I go to one-ton’s. 9 teeth on there, trying to help the Dana 30 hang on for a year.

I'm not a gear expert, but somewhere on the forum someone posted pics of a 5.13 and 4.88 pinion head. They very well might have same number of teeth. But the cuts were deeper on the 5.13 and appeared to be as deep as the pinion shaft. The 4.88 (and numerically lower) pinion heads had shallower cuts and therefore more metal. If you're easy on the throttle when off roading, you shouldn't have a problem.
