Took my jeep 6 miles to the store yesterday and it smelled very strongly of gasoline. Got back home and found gas pouring from the fuel line underneath that is close to the transmission. We can feel a gash in the line. Does this happen because of age? Or anyone have any thoughts? It's a 3.6 with a manual transmission. The clutch was replaced for the 2nd time at the dealership in March of 2025 and it's only been driven about 3000 miles since then.

I wouldn't expect age alone to cause a fuel line to suddenly develop a gash, especially on a JL. Since you had clutch work done fairly recently and the line is near the transmission, I'd take a close look to see if it was rubbing against something or possibly got damaged during the repair. I definitely wouldn't drive it until it's fixed though. A fuel leak that bad is a serious fire hazard.

your vehicle is missing a heat shield in this location. my own 2024 had the heat shield improperly installed at the factory and the nearby evap hose melted. would not be surprised if hose melted due to exhaust location, or if hose was damaged during clutch replacement

regardless i'd blame the missing heat shield rather than anything else

thank you for this helpful reply. I will mention the heat shield to the service manager. This is a $1194 repair and it's taking 5-10 business days for the dealership to get the fuel line part. I also think it was probably damaged during clutch replacement but I cannot prove it.
