Jeep started leaking gas yesterday.

What Happened:
The car turned of while approaching a stop light (~15mph). I put it park and started it again, no problem. As I approached the next stop light, it turned off again. This time it took cranked for about 4 seconds before starting. I headed towards the nearest parking lot and the car started hesitating. When I pulled in I found that it was leaking gas from what appeared to be above the gas tank. It puddled up behind the passenger rear of the vehicle. Got it towed to the dealer from there.
  • No gas leaked where it was previously parked for over 6 Hours.
  • Problems started only a couple minutes after starting it
  • Car had a full tank of gas, filled it that morning.
  • As the tow driver got it lifted, a lot more gas started leaking out. (while only the front end was on the flat bed).
  • About a half a gallon of gas leaked out (that I know of)
Service Shop:
So the service shop is telling me that nothing is wrong with the Jeep. It's no longer leaking, even after they drove it, and they never saw it leaking. While they had it, I asked them to perform the software update (Recall U62), and they claim that the update may "fixed" the issue. But that doesn't add up to me...

Has anyone else experienced gas leaks?

I didn't have the presence of mind to take a video while it was leaking, but the photos below show what was left behind. fuel-leak.jpg

Never heard of a software update that is capable of fixing a physical gas leak but Iā€™m not a Jeep engineer.

If your vehicle ends up in flames youā€™ll have a very strong case when you sue your dealer and FCA.

May want to file a complaint with NHTSA.

Did you "top off" the tank when you filled it? Clearly, there's no way in hell the thing should leak 1/2 gallon of fuel even if you did, but I'm just curious. My boat has an air vent attached to the fill tube to prevent vapor lock. If I aggressively top-off, a *small amount* fuel will find its way out of that vent.

Anyway, please file a complaint with NHTSA - it only takes 5 mins. After that, call Jeep Wave and get a case started. They will persuade your dealer (or maybe you want to try another dealer?) to look more carefully at the issue.

"Software flash fixed your leak, buddy." Holy Hell, did they say that with a straight face? Leaking fuel is no joke!

Thanks for the advice. I've just filed a complaint with NHTSA.

No, I didn't top off the tank when I filled it. I just let the nozzle shut off and and stopped pumping. The fuel gauge actually read 7/8 after filling up. Additionally I drove 7 miles to work after getting gas without an issue.

Here's the text I got from the dealer in regards to my concern:

Update

After reaching out to JeepWave to help me with this problem, the dealer was convinced to look into the issue further. They eventually found an issue with the fuel system. They're replacing the gas tank, as well another vapor venting related part. The mechanic believes that a symptom of the issue is that the tank will not fill all the way up. When I filled my tank that morning it stopped pumping after only reaching 7/8 of a tank, same thing happened to the shop when they tried.

Prior to the involvement of a JeepWave representative, the dealer had asked that I pick the vehicle up on 3 separate occasions. They claimed that the vehicle was fine. Thanks you Jeep Wave/JeepCares for making sure the dealer took my concerns seriously.

I am glad I found this thread. My JL is experiencing very similar symptoms. A couple of weeks ago, it turned off approaching an intersection. I have a manual and was able to get it started again after a couple of tries. It immediately started hesitating. I did not think to check for any gas leaks at this time. I made it to my destination and an hour or so later when i went to drive home, it was still a little jerky when driving, but better. It seemed to be better the next day, but a check engine light came on. It was driving fine and the check engine light eventually went off after a couple of days. All was well for awhile. However, yesterday, I came out to find gas leaking on my driveway, also in the right rear portion of the Jeep. Interestingly, I opened the gas cap and when looking into the tank, i could see gas dripping steadily downward. I am not sure where this would come from, but I called and had it towed to the closest dealer. In all of the time I have had the Jeep, i have also noticed the gas tank never completely fills. When the pump clicks off, it always says it is about 7/8 full. I will be curious if they find similar issues.

It sounds to me like the same issue. Although my check engine light did not come on, the mechanic who serviced my Jeep told me that the check engine light should have come on for this issue.

Dousing unused gas get recirculated back into the tank? Or is that with Diesels only? Maybe that hose is leaking?

I had to have my JLU Rubi towed to the Jeep Dealer. As I left my driveway the Jeep sputtered. I turned around and parked. I then found about a couple of cups of gas on the driveway. I was towed to the dealership. When the tow truck unloaded the Jeep...a pool of gasoline then poured onto the floor. It was pooled on the right rear of the vehicle just like yours. There was no gas under it while it first was hauled into the service bay...all of that gas just poured down when the Jeep was tilted to be unloaded by the tow truck..
In a way I am glad that the engine had acted up right way...if that much gas had poured onto the hot muffler...she would have gone up like a match and burned up a section of the dealership!!

I just had to have my JLU Rubi towed to the Jeep Dealer. As I left my driveway the Jeep sputtered. I turned around and parked. I then found new transmission fluid (I have an automatic) on the driveway. I was towed to the dealership. When the tow truck removed the rear bogey wheels...a pool of gasoline then onto the floor. It was pooled on the right rear of the vehicle just like yours. There had not been any gas under the vehicle on my driveway when the tow truck slipped the bogey wheels under the Jeep. There also was no gas under it while it first sat in the service bay...all of that gas just poured down when the driver removed the rear bogey wheels but the front end was still lifted it upward by the tow truck.
When I got home I checked my driveway...no gas on the driveway.

Seems like there are a few of us with the gas leaking issue unfortunately. My JL has been at the dealer for 20 days now. It took them a week to finally look at it, help from Jeepā€™s STAR technicians to diagnose it, another week to get parts and rumor has it I may get it back tomorrow or Monday. I was supposed to get it back yesterday but did not happen. I believe they are replacing an evap canister and the fuel tank. So disappointing to miss out on these days where I could have the top down! I think my Jeep has been at the dealer for 25% of the time I have owned it. Jeep Waves / customer service, to their credit, has done pretty well arranging the tow to the dealer and the rental. Still, pretty frustrating!
