Put the door on. Grab a hard top screw, it's same diameter as door check screw but longer. You can get it screwed in with door check in door. Screw it in a couple of turns then open the door. It will pull the check out. Remove screw and replace with proper door screw.
I don’t think this would have worked for me. Door retainer was pushed in too far to line up with the hole.

That’s what I did I grabbed a paintbrush (for lack of a dowel rod) and used it as a T handle. Had the doors on a lot quicker than I got them off.
I only use the screw in door checks in the winter. All summer the doors are just on the check strap so I don't have to fiddle with it when taking the doors off and putting them back on so I would only need to do this maybe once a year.
