No cost 3rd light relocation for stock tire carrier. Just unbolt it all and separate the oem light. Use 3m 50lb tape to attach to the top of the carrier and done. Easy 15 minute job and it takes 1.4 pounds off the tailgate as well.

Hmmm. I like this. Simple and effective. And free.

Probably not. Per FMVSS section 108, the CHMSL when the lamp is mounted below the window it is to have "no lens portion lower than 153 mm. [6 in.] below the lower edge of the rear glazing on convertibles, or 77 mm. [3 in.] on other passenger cars." (see section 12.9.4 of the below link)
Viewing angle is likely to be an issue too. Section 12.9.7 of the below link says the CHMSL must be visible along a horizontal axis up to 45° to the right/left.
(Reference material link See pages 122 and 125.

Now that I've been a kill joy, I will say I like the mod. I don't plan to do it, but for anyone with an oversize tire that creates an issue with the stock location, this would be a cheap work around.

@supamyk

I had a friend of mine in NY that did the same as you.

He went last week to get his NYS Inspection done and they would not pass his JL for inspection, due to improper placement of 3rd brake light.

They scraped his sticker and told him to remedy the 3rd brake light issue ..

So, be careful what shop / who you have do your inspection. ;) ....unless, maybe you are luckier then my friend.

Thanks! My first mod! The kayak would "ride" on the light, so this is a saver as it was just a matter of time before the plastic would break. Understand that this is not fully street legal, but moving to Mexico in a month so not so worried about that part.

Found RC $50 bracket so installed that instead. So much easier to load in the back now!

You know the soft top isn’t designed to drive with the rear window out and the side windows in, right? The side windows are prone to flying off.

Thanks! Yes, this is only 5 minute from our lake. 25mph max!

Low Bridge ! I do that with my kayak, only the cockpit rides on the arch of the tire ...keeps it at a lower angle. Anything to avoid the roof carry

Awesome idea! I just added the JCR Off-road Tire Rack so I took your idea but I drilled it out. Works great!! Looks so much better without that light over the tire IMO.
