Yeah, looks like he dumped a fair amount into this rig. Next time spend the extra for the snorkel I guess.
will a snorkel help when all the electronics are flooded? or does it only need to buy him time to back out.

I hate water crossings. I do ‘em, but they’re never enjoyable unless you’re just talking little baby crossings.
I think his floor should already have water before dropping into the hole.

Literally just watching the video and came to the forum to see whose it is lol. A shame, a nicely modded Jeep. Most likely totalled

I thought you're supposed to walk the crossing first if it's one where you can't see the bottom. Guess that didn't happen here...
They said they did have a walker but you have to remember the Jeep is a lot wider and a lot heavier than your walker. Mud in this area can be exceptionally treacherous and should be avoided.

The real problem was when they said "The gates were closed but we found the river". Yeah, there's a reason why the gates exist and are closed. Considering the river to be an option is a bad idea for multiple reasons.

Really weird editing for the promo image. Makes it look like the Jeep is in a swimming pool instead of a silty river, and Matt has no legs.

Right? My primary interest in watching was to find out where the heck is water like that. It's a clickbait move. Not impressed.

Relax - it's water. It's not like he's in a skimpy bikini talking about a broken axle, etc

The electronics aren't the primary concern. At least not directly. The engine compartment isn't watertight so electronics are already fairly well protected from water intrusion. But your power supply is susceptible and that's where the problem is. Battery terminals and alternator do not fare well submerged.

A snorkel may help slightly with water in the engine air intake but it's not going to matter much if your power supply is shorted. But a snorkel isn't enough. The max water fording depth is where it is because of the drivetrain breather tubes. Transmission, t-case & diffs all need a breather tube that extends above the max water fording depth. When they're submerged they will cool and need to suck in air. If they suck in water all your drivetrain fluids need to be changed immediately to avoid damage. So to raise your max water fording depth the first thing is to extend the drivetrain breather tubes.

In spite of it's name, the original and primary purpose of a snorkel is not water. It's to move the air intake to someplace with less airborne dust. It's a desert/baja thing not a water thing.

I think his floor should already have water before dropping into the hole.
The max water fording depth is just above the lower door hinges. The JL is designed to have water on the floor. That's why the floor has drain plugs. So the rule of thumb is that the moment your lower door hinges go under, your priority must immediately shift to finding shallower water. Either change direction or back out.

I'm from the area. There are places where you can find water like that but they're very rare. I did not recognize the photo as being any one of those places. (turns out it's not a place like that)

They're also rare and special enough that you never want to see a vehicle recovery in them. So that's 2 reasons to want to watch and find out.

Pretty sure he is a forum member. He made some mistakes that resulted in a costly life lesson. Pretty sure this was a self correcting problem that won’t be repeated. Thankfully most of the poor choices we have all made don’t end up on YouTube for others to critique.

it might be alright, the only concern i would have is the canbus connector in the glove box and the ECU under the hood. the owner said he shut it off. which means there is a good chance its gonna end up fine after drying out for a few days and doing some basic checks so to speak
