Here is the first look at the front JL Rubicon Dana 44 ring and pinion compared to a front JK Rubicon Dana 44 R&P.

Both gear sets are 5.38s ratio with a 43-8 tooth count.

The JK R& P on the left and the JL on the right:

JK on the left, JL on the right:

Look at the difference in pinion shank diameters! Wow! and the splined yoke shank is massive too!

The tooth depth is shallower on the new JL gear, however it is a different gear cut, resulting in a longer tooth profile, which should give it more contact and strength.

JK on the bottom, JL on the top:

The teeth are shallower and have a more pronounced curvature of the tooth. This means more tooth contact, which will give more strength.

Lots of interesting changes, we'll update more as we get out the measuring devices and start to spec them out side by side.

So much for the JL gears being weaker.

This is probably an ignorant question, but this is how I learn:

You said both sets are 5.38s. The rubicon comes stock with 4.10 gears, so are these not stock parts? If not stock, where are they from?

All Qs are good.

Yes, both sets are 5.38s and both sets are genuine DANA gears. We received our first shipment of OE JL gears from Dana last week.

We used the 5.38s as they will have the smallest pinion head (pinion head gets smaller as the gear ratio gets numerically higher) and would be the smallest (and possibly weakest) gearset for the JL Rubi D44 available at this time.

I've been quite curious on all manner of strength and durability for the JL axles--particularly the front Dana 30, and the rear Dana 44 on a Sport with the LSD axle package.

I'm hoping they're tough enough for years of daily driving and fairly hard (but not all that hard) wheeling on ~33's.

From what I've been seeing, Rubicon grade JL tech looks way tough for the 33's it rolls on.

Are you saying you have gear sets available for the JL RUBI ?

456s maybe?

Let’s see the old d30 vs the new 186mm. I’d be interested to see those differences as well!

Anyone have the torque limits for the old d 30 and the new?

Dana has told us the JL D30 gearset is the same as the JK.

That's interesting..seems to be completely different information. Everything else that has come out has stated a bigger ring gear.

Although the more searching I do the more it seems that the JK already had the 186mm and the 181mm is an older style dana 30.

Still, the ring gear and pinion are still the new design right? The new contact patch and all?

If you're buying a Sport model, the $595 limited slip upgrade (which automatically gives you the Dana 44HD rear axle) is looking better and better all the time. Wish I had gotten it.
