From Detroit News today:
FCA announces they plan to open their US factories April 14 (Ford also making same announcement, VW says April 5 for their Tennessee plant). UAW isn't sure they will agree to that date.

They were all contracted workers, not workers in the factory protected by the union.
Having a whole family of FCA workers this is rough. My Dad is fine as he's in a back room building things he can't even tell me about but my brother making axles is going to lose hours here. Bummer.

There is going to be a huge push to have certain essential items produced in America soon. This “shortages” nonsense on drugs because everything is made in China where people make 35 cents an hour is over. Tariffs are coming. We can’t make ventilators here? No more.
Engines are pretty important so the auto worker will be back on the job. Cars will be more expensive though.

This is a great vision. and one I agree with. But there is a significant snag with it: workers. The US does not have the workforce domestically to produce all that stuff (and more) regardless of cost.
before this pandemic, there were hundreds of thousands of jobs — good jobs — from truck drivers to welders to factory workers to skilled trades to... that were infilled. We (had) the jobs but we didn’t have the employees who could pass a drug test /criminal background and show up every day to work for a decent wage. If we try (and we should) to re-engage in manufacturing in this country, we have some very basic questions to ask and answer: where will we get the millions of new workers to fill those jobs?
