FCA pulls out of 2020 Easter Jeep Safari
https://www.autoblog.com/2020/03/13/fca-no-easter-jeep-safari/

FCA told media Friday that it is pulling out of the 2020 Easter Jeep Safari, a beloved annual off-roading event in Moab, Utah, that takes place over nine days and ends Easter Sunday. Jeep has been a staple participant throughout the years, using it to showcase wild and much-beloved concept vehicles.

The news isn't all bad. Autoblog reached out to FCA to ask whether we'll see this year's concepts elsewhere, and while a Jeep spokesperson reassured us that the concepts will still get their moment in the spotlight, they haven't quite yet figured out exactly when or where.

Also, it should be noted that even though Jeep won't officially be participating, the Easter Jeep Safari itself will go on as planned. In fact, the city council of the tourism-driven town of Moab voted Wednesday to defeat a measure that would have put restrictions on large gatherings, The Salt Lake Tribute reported.

For the time being, at least, the Safari is a go.

It is unclear to me if they are pulling out over COVID-19 “large gathering” concerns or if they are pulling out, period, beyond 2020 and haven’t announced it.

I have two Jeep Jamborees booked for later this year and I hope that there are no “large gathering” concerns by then.....

But it’s outside... plenty of social spacing.
I agree. That’s why it’s unclear to me. But, given how close to the Event it is (about 3-weeks?), I find the timing odd if NOT about COVID-19. If they were going to “pull out” of the event in the ordinary course, it seems that they would have done it last year or at the latest right at the start of this year.

This is going to take months to resolve. Even if the numbers wane, it will flare up again when people relax and start going out and gathering again, until it has run its course and the herd immunity builds up enough to stop it.

Delaying or cancelling things like EJS only serve to delay the inevitable, and protect FCA from liability.

Large gatherings are discouraged.

It will be interesting to see how many people actually go to EJS this year?

Jeep pulling out of EJS is just the start.

This Monday will be the start of something we have never seen in America. Mass self-isolation.

Most companies will ask workers to stay home and work from home. They are closing schools. Major Universities are going to online classes for the rest of the year. Students are being cleared out of dorms and being sent home for the rest of the year. Public venues will close. Large venues like casinos will close. Travel is discouraged. As a result airfare is unbelievably cheap now. You can buy round trip flights for less then a $100 to many Cities now. I know someone who flew round trip from FL to Chicago for $42 round trip yesterday. Hotels are giving rooms away.

SLOWING DOWN THE SPREAD of COVID-19 serves a real purpose: helps our healthcare infrastructure cope with a rise in the number of Americans in need for hospitalization, and buys us time to develop a vaccine.

There are only 65,000 ICU beds in this country. That’s grossly insufficient to cope with the expected number of serious cases when the virus peaks in a few more weeks.

This chart helped me understand the importance of trying to slow down the spreading of COVID-19:

No doubt people will be infected. The whole idea to self isolate is to slow down the infection rate so hospitals and emergency rooms are not overwhelmed all at once.
