The Team at ExoShield is beyond excited to be a part of this forum and community 🎉 We want to make sure anyone here that wants to be protected by ExoShield gets taken care of!

So first of all, what is ExoShield? Think of it like a giant phone screen protector, but engineered to protect your windshield from damage caused by rocks and other small objects hitting the bare glass.

Jeep Wrangler JL ExoShield - We're here to save your windshield! Film Pull - Resized

Our goal is to keep the broken windshield club as small as possible from here on out!

If you’ve been Jeeping for any amount of time you are no stranger to the inevitable stress of even the smallest hit to your windshield. Let ExoShield give you some peace of mind while you are on and off-road!

How does ExoShield work, and how do you get protected?

ExoShield is a completely transparent film that features our endurance class nanoceramic hardcoat to make it ultra durable for long lasting protection in any environment. My (vague) understanding is that DoT doesn't allow window films on front windshields due to safety requirements. Windshield glass, with its layered design, is a type of safety glass with specific fracture design that minimizes the probability of injury in a collision. Window film tends to keep the glass fragments together in larger pieces. It's the same reason why you can't install window tint on front windshields in many states, or why stronger polycarbonate windshields aren't a good idea on the highway. I'm not worried about the legality, but the safety aspect is a serious concern.

How durable is it and how good is the clarity when used in 100 degree plus heat with baked on dead bugs and windshield washer use?

How does this hold up to windshield wipers over time?
Our Nano-Ceramic top coat has been engineered to give you clear, long lasting protection! On daily drivers the useable life is around 18-24 months depending on your level of maintenance.

That being said, as the film wears down, you might start to see micro-scratches in the film, similar to how a windshield wears in the wiper path.

At any point if you feel that visibility is compromised, we recommend replacing the film, but it is up to your discretion as far as the safety of the visibility.

Like any protection film there is a level of maintenance needed to keep ExoShield in peak performance!

Try to get to the bugs with a microfiber and some soapy water before they are totally caked on, same with tree sap or other gunk that could bake into the film.

When it comes to hot climates we have tested ExoShield all around the world to make sure drivers like yourself have a quality option when it comes to protecting your windshield. From 100+ degree summers to freezing Canadian winters, ExoShield GT3 is engineered to protect any vehicle, in all conditions.

Hey! Thank you for your comment! We care a lot about safety here at ExoShield, so we wanted to address a couple of your points:

The DoT regulations do vary by state but in general tend to be concerned with the visible light transmittance (VLT) through the windshield (which is why tint is in some cases not permitted on the windshield). ExoShield is actually more transparent than the windshield alone, and so it should not violate any VLT-related regulations.

As the film wears over time and depending on where you drive, your maintenance schedule, etc., you may start to see visible microscratches in the film - similar to when your windshield becomes scratched and pitted which can start to cause glare and visibility issues. If you feel your visibility starts to become compromised, we absolutely recommend removing and replacing the film at that point to avoid any safety issues (at your own discretion).

As far as safety in the event of an accident or major impact, you’re right that windshield glass is a layered glass - it’s basically two panes of annealed glass held together with a sticky adhesive PVB layer in between to hold them together. This design is meant to ensure that the glass is held together in the event of a significant impact to the windshield, which helps keep the driver safe. This is unlike the side windows, which are designed to shatter into a specific fracture pattern rather than stick together.

Adding a film via an adhesive layer (like ExoShield or any other windshield protection, tint, etc.) will not affect the breakage pattern of the windshield specifically, since it will just act as an additional sticky layer that holds the glass together in the event of an accident.

How does this compare with Racing Optics? I am currently using their 3 layer protection and loving it. How long does ExoShield last?

ETA: Cost?
One of the main differences would be the removable layers. One single piece of ExoShield is 5mil thick and will give consistent impact protection for the entirety of its useable life. When you have a layered system as you remove the top layers your impact resistance drops dramatically.

These systems are great in specific situations like racing, but for daily drivers we want to make sure ExoShield has the maximum level of impact protection for the entire experience.

The average lifespan on a daily driver is approximately 18-24 months with ExoShield.

For an accurate quote we recommend you check out our dealer map and contact your nearest installer!

I would have possibly been interested in this product for self install. Have you considered offering this product direct to consumers or do you allow vendors to sell without installation?

That’s an interesting product. Have you had to remove layer?

Not yet, just installed it last month. I like that it is DIY install, optically clear (didn't mess up my ACC), and the customer service was stellar. The manufacturer says to peel at 6 months, but several on this forum have gone 18 months between peels.
