Hey! I’m new to this group and would love some insight. My JL has 5k miles on it. Just got it in June. I went to get in and turn it on yesterday like any other day and the brake pedal was totally locked up. So it wouldn’t turn on when I hit run. it made a terrible noise in the engine like it was trying to but wouldn’t actually turn on.

Long story short, called a tow truck and the driver was able to push the brake really hard and with some effort was finally able to get it started. It had a really strong exhaust smell after he started it for quite a while and the brake was still stiffer than normal but not locked. I still had it towed in because it doesn’t seem right but of course the dealership said it’s working fine for them. Anyone else have this happen?

Thanks in advance!

Mine was stiff but the Jeep was running after being parked for 20 minutes, and I was about to pull out of a parking slot. It gave way to normal pressure only moments after. I’m not sure what the hell that was all about but it has been fine for over a week

Sounds like someone pressed the brake pedal while the jeep was off. It will stay soft for 1-2 presses while off. After that it will become very difficult to press.

I’ve had this happen twice now, I’d forgotten about it until I saw your post. I’m having issues with my dealership so I won’t hold my breath on them diagnosing and fixing it.

My GM vehicle along with my wife's Mustang will do this from time to time. After setting for awhile sometimes the brake pedal will be very hard. I just have to push the pedal a bit harder to trip the neutral safety switch, and they start fine.Since both do it I've never been bothered by it, and just figure it's the nature of the beast. Oddly my JL has never done this.

I'd be more concerned with this "terrible" engine noise you mentioned.
Did it make a click click click click noise in quick concessions?
If yes, maybe read this: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/yep-my-jeep-just-broke-down-won’t-start.35249/#post-796192

This has happened to me a few times. Each time is after my 3 year old climbs into the driver's seat and pstarts pressing buttons, pressing on the brake pedal, etc. The brake pedal locks after 1-2 pumps if the engine is off and I could not seem to start it after that. the Fix? Just a couple of clicks on my Remote Start.
