Simple question/TLDR first:

Can a used generator be installed to replace a defective MGU in my 2.0 eTorque without dealer programming?

The context:
A main battery issue/short fried a couple of systems in my JL, including the MGU I believe, as the controller is integrated into that unit and codes P0A94-00 and P0A94-05 suggest the controller got zapped. Dealer says the part is backordered and I have a trip next week, so I can't wait. (I prefer to do my own work anyway.) So, I found a matching salvage MGU available locally that I could "pop in." I understand that new MGUs ship without software and need to be flashed. This one should have software on it, since it was previously installed. Would it be anything VIN or vehicle-specific, it might this get me by?

Thanks guys... My Moab trip is on the line here😬

MGU requires programming. However a used one may work plug and play, so long as it has the proper software already installed.

Personally I wouldn't waste the time, but if you're so inclined you can give it a go. The best bet would be to use wi-tech or Jscan on the salvage vehicle and verify the part number (software version) matches your current one.

Went ahead and installed a new MGU from dealer. Will have it flashed and see whether that gets rid of the codes.

What codes did you get when you installed the new MGU? Did the flash help get rid of the codes?

The new MGU produced a whole bunch of new codes, but the dealer flash got rid of those. It didn't get rid of the P0A94-00 and P0A94-05 codes, but those did go away after putting some miles on the odometer. In hindsight I think the old MGU was just fine.
