At some point (MY21?) a change was made to the ESS negative battery cables, swapping the cable ends between the aux battery cable and the body ground cable. This makes it easier to disconnect both batteries from body ground, but makes it more difficult to disconnect just the aux battery.

Here's the main battery negative terminal with the battery sensor attached and the cables disconnected.
Cable A old connects to the body ground, new connects to the aux battery negative.
Cable B old connects to the aux battery negative, new connects to the body ground.

With the old cables, disconnecting cable B disconnects just the aux battery negative. With the new cables, this should disconnect both batteries from the body ground.

With the new cables, removing both cables and reconnecting cable B (body ground) should disconnect just the aux battery.

Just to clarify, you're referring to the terminal styles, right? The thinner cable, regardless of the terminal used, still goes to the aux?

Hey folks, I finally decided to pull my aux battery out of the mix and found that I have these new style battery connectors. So I could do this:
Jeep Wrangler JL ESS Battery Cable Change 1663598154925

But there isn't enough of that bolt to also add my winch ground to it.

I feel like I need something similar to this:
Quadratec JK-HDBT12 Extreme Duty Battery Terminals for 12-18 Jeep Wrangler JK | Quadratec
Jeep Wrangler JL ESS Battery Cable Change 1663598388944

But I don't like the idea of using brass since, according to the googles, Brass is only 28% as conductive as copper.

I saw somewhere on here where somebody used tinned copper bus bar but I haven't been able to find something small. Any suggestions?

It won’t be pretty, but it looks like you could attach your winch ground to the bolt that clamps the negative terminal to the battery post.

What was your final solution?

Not the cleanest thing but it seems to work. I’d like to find something better. The upside down flange nut isn’t necessary, the gold part is threaded and snug. I just screwed it on for a place to keep it handy.

I cut the ends off and just used the middle part.

the threaded stud that goes through the sensor makes things challenging. @Mhonda found these which might work better:

I'm trying to implement Jerry's idea in the 1st image below (RE: https://www.jlwranglerforums.com/forum/threads/ess-dual-battery-management.60034/post-2061724 ) but I'm running into problems connecting the aux cable (version A in the 2d image) with the battery disconnect switch, and then running a 2d cable back to the negative post. The usvehj terminal kit (3rd image) you used might work, but I don't see how the Kolodogo terminal post adapter helps connect additional cables. I doubt we can remove the existing battery posts to replace them, or did you have a different use of them in mind?

The thinking was that the post could be put on upside down, oriented like the one on the left. As long as the female part is also M6 x 1.0 it will thread onto the top of the sensor. Then the battery and winch grounds could go on the male portion of this do-dad with enough threads left to use the flange nut.

Also notice the narrowed portion on the L adapter isn’t thin enough to get the flange nut on too. It’s also a larger diameter hole than the threaded stud. So this was no good.

Edit: I went ahead and ordered the other thing. Will update once it’s here.

Ok so I swapped it out to the item @Mhonda found (thanks for showing it to me). The male threads could be a smidge longer but I think there is enough there to work.

In other news, the packaging was ridiculous, box way too big and they came in a felt baggie! 😂

If anyone has the ability to machine these things, the female part only needs to have threads 3/8” deep. The male part would be perfect for this at 1/2” tall. Threads are M6 x 1.0.

NOW they’re $2 cheaper… wtf

Wonder why they changed the ends? The smaller diameter cable is the Aux ground though no matter what end is on it?
The only reason I can think of is that it makes it easier to disconnect both batteries from the body ground. With the old cables, you have to disconnect both cables at the main battery negative terminal. With the new cables you only have to disconnect one cable.

I pulled fuse F42 and disconnected the smaller cable on the negative terminal.

I am getting a beeping noise, sounds like from exterior of Jeep and voltage from alternator is pegged out.
Tomorrow I will swap out ground lines, something is not right!
