Looking at the fueleconomy.gov site to see how the 3.6 BSG did in the JL, and saw interesting comparison...

*Updated with 2020 2.0 ess (unlimited Rubicon) & 2020 2.0 BSG

For the unlimited ...
2020 3.6 BSG 20 combined, 19 City 22 Hwy
2020 3.6 ess 20 combined, 18 city, 22 hwy
2020 2.0 BSG 21 combined, 21 city, 22 hwy
2020 2.0 ess 21 combined, 21 city, 22 hwy
2019 3.6 ess 20 combined, 18 city, 23 hwy
2019 2.0 BSG 22 combined, 22 city, 24 hwy

Disappointed in the 3.6 BSG... was hopeful it would have been closer to the 2.0, or at least better than the 3.6 ess. Also not sure why the hwy number went down by 1 mpg from 2019 to 2020.

Rethinking a bit my choice of 3.6 in my 2020 JLUS... but I already have a 2.0 direct inject turbo in another car that had some issues, and wanted the ‘simplicity’ of the Pentastar. Was just hoping the etorque version was going to post better mpg numbers.

Could be 2020 tests are a bit different as they are always making them tougher which would explain the change. Also could be related to a tire or other slight change. 1 mpg probably is within the variability you'd expect.

I for one would like to welcome you to the internet! You don't need to sign your posts as we all can see who made the post.

As for engine choices, the simpler the better.

Three weeks later since I brought home the JL 2 dr manual and I am getting 12 l / 100 km which is 19.6 miles/gallon and it is solely driving around Toronto . I am easy with the gas pedal and I never expected such a great mileage from this Jeep .

Doc... Duh.
This makes the existence of the bsg baffling. Just why add all the cost and complexity for... nothing.

I’m curious if the 2.0 without the BSG gets the same as the current 2.0. If so again why would you add the cost and complexity of the bsg.

Diesel and PHEV remain vaporware.

It's a brick:like:...
My JL gets a much better mpg than my TJ every did.
It’s all good - so looking forward to my new brick, just thought the BSG would be more economical to run than non BSG of same displacement. The fact that it’s not makes it even more curious why they are offering it in only one trim, and the non BSG in the rest.

I just finished reading “Because Internet: Understanding the New Rules of Language” by Gretchen McCulloch that came out last week. I’m still happy to use a period at the end of my chat/IM’s, still use LOL to mean I’m laughing, and still like to use a signature... hope I can still be part of the Jeep family regardless ;-)

BSG only adds 1mpg to the 5.7 Hemi. I wouldn’t have expected anything more than that for the smaller 2.0 or 3.6 engines

Since when does one buy a aerodynamic lifted brick and complain it gets low mpg?? My Jeep JLUR averages 19 and I drive it like I want. Roads here aren’t flat period lots of rolling hills.

My JKU barely got 14 downhill with the wind blowing behind it. EPA ratings don’t mean squat vs real world. I have gotten as high as 21 but that took most of the fun out of driving my Jeep lol

2018 JLU 3.6 auto, mostly on Toronto city roads 20-30km per day round trip, 13 mpg, I'm tend to gun it most of the time. On a trip to Ithaca, NY I think I saw 20mpg

The Belt Start Generator's mission is to improve the "City" mpg , stop and go driving, which does help meet the all important CAFE standards. The 48v lithium ion battery allows the engine to remain off for longer periods while running accessories, and makes for a silky smooth restart and acceleration.
The ESS,with its small 12v battery, and conventional starter, would work in Stop and Go, of lesser durations. 1 mpg gain is worth millions of dollars for CAFE standards, and lets not forget an idling engine pumps out more emissions than a stopped engine.
FCA paid millions to Tesla to buy their Carbon Credits...

I do mostly city driving and I'm at 22mpg in my 2.0T. I leave the ESS on all the time. I do think it helps in the city quite a bit. I did take it out on the highway one time for an extended period and it really didn't get any better than what I get in the city.

The BSG doesn't do anything for highway mileage. It cranks the engine and provides a split second of additional torque at very low RPMs as you're starting from a dead stop. It never was intended to be a full hybrid, but as a much improved start stop system over the 12V ESS. The fact that the city mileage had a full MPG improvement over the standard ESS says something about how well the BSG works.
