I added the last bit to at some revival to this thread... it worked :)
I don't know about yours but I stomp on mine and it goes hard. Much better than what PDriveTV reported.

Even in the JK, the owners manual says that light pinging is normal.

What fuel are you using mate? (Just noticed you're from this side of the globe as well)

cheers mate, not many JL Owners down this of the globe yet.
I know what you mean, the JL goes hard! I did not expect it to be this fast, blows every other 4x4 in a drag.
The pinging only happens at light throttle loads at low rpm, 1500-2000ish. Usually when your cruising along. Under wot or spirited driving there is no pinging at all.
I really love the JL but the pinging is a bit of a concern.

What petrol are you putting in it? Brand and grade?

tried all brands of 98 and some tanks of regular to see if it would fix it. It’s less on 98. Jeep service agreed it was pinging, but after they had no fix they gave me some crap story of it being the cam phasers. A separate tuning shop also said its pining. I know the sound pretty well, back in my hoon days I destroyed an engine from Ignoring that subtle pinging sound. Basically Jeep ain’t going to release a new tune because of the hoops they’d have to jump through revising its emissions with EPA in USA. I’m not the only wrangler with it either. I’d just pay to get the Ecu at cruise map tuned but no one has the software to hack the JL computer, only the JK. It’s terribly annoying to drive when it does it. Not only do you get the pinging sound but has a momentary studder.

I've read somewhere that these ECUs adjust timing to stay just on the edge of pinging. So you might be chasing your own tail with everything you do to avoid it.

For a proper solution, if there's such a thing as a more sensitive knock sensor, it might be worth looking in to.

Until then, reducing the engine temps will make things better. Remove the hood liner and take off the grille inserts and see what you get.

That’s the problem, there are no other Type of knock sensors available and the dealer doesn’t believe anything is wrong with them. That could be just a lack of knowledge at the dealer service, they are pretty much glorified parts fitters and not real troubleshooters. It’s almost as if the knock sensors are not listening right or the computer isn’t retarding timing quick enough. Good tip with the under bonnet temps. I cut my vent holes out and made them functional.
It’s not a good solution but I found running 98 octane with a mix of 10% e85 added, almost stops the pinging completely. I’m at the point where I just have to live with it until If/when the engine fails. I like the JL enough to think about an engine rebuild or swap if the worst happens out of warranty.

exactly! It runs great and pulls hard even with the long gearing of the manual whether I run 93 or 87. It only happens after cruising and under 2000rpm but if I give it more juice it is fine

I saw someone suggested that running a cooler thermostat might work to reduce the knocking/pinging. Any thoughts?

Just a thought, I notice a “jingle” under mine when under low RPMs. I believe it’s the dual mass flywheel springs and dual clutch springs making noises when the torque on the engine changes. Could that be what you are hearing?

Most of us knew what we were getting ourselves in to and we still did it because of the vehicle... that's what makes a true Jeeper. You definitely sound like a lost Toyota or even a Bronco guy (no one knows how the Bronco is either) :CWL:
So being a true Jeeper means spending $40k-$50k on a new Jeep and not complaining about how bad the stock tune is?

Correct. It also means not having anything resembling a hummer h2 in your nick.

I think 90 percent of the problem here, is that these engines cannot be driven below about 2200 RPM, period. There is simply no torque below that.

I experience the same issues as everyone else below 2000 RPM, and driving in parking lots is the absolute worst. The vehicle bucks and kicks like a sick mare.

But the truth is that you have to keep the revs up on these engines. Just don't drive them before 2200 RPM, and you'll be much happier.

I have 35s and installed 4.88 gears in my Rubicon, and I STILL just about never use 6th gear on the highway.

Yep, you gotta keep the RPM's up. I have a Sport and today I was in 4th or 5th gear on the PA turnpike at speeds of 70-80mph. Merging from the short entry ramps was easy with the high end power. Every time I wound the engine out and went from 40-70mph in 3rd and then hit 4th gear, and it was effortless. Totally different engine after 3k RPM.

That's probably part of why the auto drives so well. It has no reservations about winding the motor out. The 3.6L feels and sounds great as it heads towards redline.
