How will the new Eco Diesel handle low Sulfur fuel? Maybe this is no longer a problem. Will it handle diesel in Mexico, Central America, and all throughout South America, or Africa?

With a much lower than sufficient amount of lubricating sulfur and the higher price per gallon, the only benefit of a diesel engine is its minimally affected fuel economy when carrying or pulling extra weight.

Back in the good old days of 15,000 parts per million sulfur content, the fuel had the lubricity required to combat the wear and erosion that comes with such high injection pump, nozzle, and cylinder compression pressures. The fuel is now very "dry". Many individuals out there with earlier diesels are adding lubricant treatments to each tank of fuel. They're willing to increase the cost per mile for the sake of longevity. That can't be done with a modern diesel without freaking out the emissions system.

Back in the good old days of diesel being cheaper than regular gasoline, fuel economy was great compared to the same vehicle with a gasser. Now, depending on one's location, I've seen diesel priced anywhere from in between mid and high test gas to about $0.90 higher than 91/93 octane.

I grew up in the family business of truck and heavy equipment repair. We used to love diesels and only drove personal vehicles that burned it. All of my first vehicles were diesels. Oldsmobile Delta 98's, vw rabbits, pickups, and various 80's era Mercedes with the inline four or five cylinders. Nowadays, I wouldn't want to get involved with one.

To answer the OP's question, LSD will prematurely age your emissions system, which is designed to run on ULSD. More sulfur = more emissions = more work for your DPF and SCR system.

It has been a year since this thread was alive.

Just saw Trail Recon was in Baja with his Diesel JL.

Has Pemex updated to USLD yet?

What about rural baja?

The focus of the redesign for running on low sulfur, is on emissions. The big negative, is the grossly shortened lifespan of the injection system. Sulfur provided the much needed lubrication and cooling properties to combat premature wear and erosion in a fuel system that runs way higher pressures than that of a gasoline motor. Seeing the first repair invoice for r&r and a rebuild/tune of the injection pump, will be a rude awakening.
