But I have not found another thread discussing it so I will ask...

Example would be the Wouxun KG1000 G with remote face plate.

What issues would you have if you just mounted the base unit in the engine compartment (would be what, 3-5 feet away from most other mounting positions) and mount the face plate in the cab? Seems like it would be extremely easier, closer to the battery for connection and the antenna could be wired and routed to the driver side (about the same distance from the unit or close to it). Making the only wire into the cab be the one for the faceplate. The mic also plugs into the faceplate so nothing extra needed there.

I would assume this is not wise due to other possible electrical interference that would reduce the effectiveness or life of the radio itself? Maybe too hot? But haven't seen anything regarding this type of install.

Like I said, dumb question but wanted to get some clarification.

I wouldn't advise it for the reasons you mentioned; heat and interference as well as moisture. I would mount it inside the cab where it is least likely to be exposed to the kind of heat the engine creates; the interference from the alternator etc under the hood and moisture from engine mishaps (cooling system or oil blowby or any other problems that can happen) as well as water from going thru puddles etc.

All valid points, thank you.
