While looking under the Jeep, I noticed this little guy on the front driveshaft.

Jeep Wrangler JL Driveshaft CV leak Ibcs18Ql

It looks like a small amount of grease or black oil was slung on to the CV flange and on to the Transmission housing. Not much, just enough to get some splatter on the housing and a small wet spot on the flange. I turned the driveshaft by hand and ran my finger along the boot and felt no cracks. It looks like it may have come out from a hidden crack under the clamp.

Today was the first time running the front axle since the lift was put on. I’m wondering if grease pooled at the forward end of the boot and was slung out when I spun up the driveshaft.

Is this something to start worrying about? The Jeep is still under the drivetrain warranty, but if it needs a new driveshaft I’d rather not go with a factory replacement. My JK seemed to have regular problems with the CV’s.

Is it oil or grease?

The rzeppa wouldn't have oil in it. A leak at a pinion flange (gear oil) or t-case flange (ATF) will often pool in the cavity of the flange and eventually find its way out. If it's grease it could be the rzeppa itself.

If you're worried I'd clean it up well with solvent of your choice and monitor anew.

You could also separate the d/s at the offending location and if there's more lubricant between the flanges, that's your answer.

Not sure what it is. Smell test didn’t smell like anything, though it was thicker than ATF in the T case, and was jet black. I didn’t think that there was a direct line of fluid flow from the T case output seal to the CV interior though.

Next is the lick test, if it tastes like oil substance it probably is
