Dumb question from a Jeep newbie... when hard top is on, is it safe to drive with rear glass window raised up?

You're "not supposed to", something about potential exhaust gas issues...

Probably ok but I broke a window shock on a camper shell on a F250 doing that last year. But I was wheeling at night, really fast, and went into a wash out. So don’t do that. Lol.

There are a couple people in the town I live in that have their rear windshield on their hard top open all the time. I see the same few JLs and they always have their rear glass open. I don't get it unless you're hauling something longer that sticks out?

Why would you do that but leave the hard top on?

Short answer, why not? To each their own I say, how about hardtop on, back window up, one freedom panel removed, doors on, and the windshield down. That's the thing, the possibilities are almost endless...

I sometimes do this when I just have my front panels off to help with wind buffeting, or when I’m running my top on but no doors. Haven’t had any issues and I occasionally check the bolts that secure the glass to the hard top just in case to make sure they aren’t becoming loose. Might look goofy but definitely eases my mind when I don’t see my hard top start to “move” on head winds

One reason not to drive with it open, is that if you forget about it and backup into something, or something falls on it, you are looking at about $1,000+ to replace the glass.

Driving with the top on and back window open makes a WORLD of difference in air flow and driver comfort, on a warm day.. Some of us don't have a garage so taking the top completely off is not a sensible, long term option. I asked this same question awhile back and it was pointed out to me that the window getting hit by a stone was a possibility.

I've had no problems neither on my JK or JL leaving the rear window open.

That's actually a really great point. When the glass is up, you can't see it at all with any of your mirrors, so I can see pulling in to my garage and forgetting it's up... then pushing the button to close the garage door, which will definitely come down onto the glass.
