Does anybody remove their fenders to go wheeling?

Saturday I saw some really nice trail rigs out at Hidden Falls. Most were JKs. A good number of them had fenders removed altogether. While I’m sure it’s extremely practical, it looked kind of weird for a vehicle driven on road. None of the JLs had theirs removed. Does/has anyone done that to keep them from getting damaged? How hard is it to remove them and put them back on?
