Do you think Plasti Dip will adversely affect synthetic winch line?

I was going to try to utilize the stock Warn hook for a while but wanted to protect the small exposed rope section by dipping the top half of the thimble. I’d think it would be ok?

It should not hurt the winch line, just protect it but you might not be able to see any damage to it. I have thought about doing about the same thing to a few winch lines I have to protect the ends especially a few soft shackles I have tied.

Whatever bonding agent is in the material can probably degrade the line. If you are really concerned about it, use a winch cover or fabricate a cover if it’s mounted low in the bumper

not knocking people on this forum, but, i'd ask the winch line manufacturer...not us.

they would know better what it will do. they've probably tried it, or, will after you ask, so they can improve their product/brand.

Plastic Dip contains toluene which will affect UHMWPE.

I’m going another direction as I’d want no doubt. I thought you guys would answer more quickly than a rope manufacturer. :like:Thanks!

I could dip it in wax, then plasti dip. The wax should be inert enough right?

No concern with water or FOD getting under the coating and attacking the rope over time?

Water? None. If I wanted to encourage drying, then I could stop the dip before the two sides come back together and the end is drawn through the center of the main line.

FOD? I really don’t see it being any more difficult to clean than it would be if trying to stop FOD under the thimble side of the exposed loop. Do you think the difference would be measurable in the life of the rope? I’ll be able to repair if it becomes a factor in a recovery situation.

I know the strength of ropes is impacted by the individual fibers ability to move and distribute the force.

And the thimble would do that. The coating wouldn’t affect that unless you’d like to demonstrate how that might not be the case.
