You don't necessarily need a torque wrench, but it's a good idea...

About 20 ft-lbs (13mm socket) for the drain plug.

About 18 ft-lbs for the filter cap (24mm socket), but I usually tighten the cap by hand.

May The Force be with you... just not too much force.

Invest in a Fumoto Valve, you never have to mess with it again. I've one on every one of my cars for the past 10 years, even race cars. They're glorious.

No, hand tight plus half a turn or so with a wrench.

Just ask @cosine he knows!

I tried the metric sizes on the filter cap & drain plug and found SAE sizes a much better fit, no slop like the metric sizes. If you have both SAE & Metric sets take a 1/2" on your drain plug & a 15/16" socket on your filter cap and see how much better they fit :)

Being light torque fasteners it's not as critical, but that plastic filter cap wouldn't take much to round off w/ a loose 12pt 24mm socket FWIW.

You're absolutely correct... I only carry/use SAE sockets with my JL... I'm just too accustomed to quoting in metric sizes.

Truth be told, this is my first American car (if you remove the F from the CA).

The thought of having a valve down there scares the heck out of me. I guess that they are proven and lots of folks use them but, I just might be too paranoid to put one on!
