I just read through some posts of people only disconnecting the driver's side sway bar link. I thought you always had to disconnect both. Any thoughts on this? have you tried it?

I read about it too, but I feel safer disconnecting both sides. This way it stays in place and does not move around.

Seems like laziness. Also, a possible recipe for damaged parts. When the side still connected droops, the disconnected side of the sway bar will pull down the equal amount while the same side of the axle is being stuffed.

Retired from Corrections....I have stories.
Lazy yes, but still effective. As long as you tire the disconnected sway bar link up.... or out of the way. It will work just like both are disconnected.

and this doesnt cause any unnecessary stress in parts? because the other link is still connected?

There's no stress because the swaybar is moving freely. Just make sure the swaybar isn't in contact with anything because it will be swinging a lot more. I've done this many times without issue.

And how do you do make sure it isnt? I mean, is there anything extra other than tying the link out of the way?

It shouldn't be an issue, but the only way you can check is by inspecting while you're fully flexed.
