Wd-40 to clean the parts??

Never put an oil on anything you plan to paint...

Sand/scuff, clean with acetone, then primer/paint

As mentioned, powdercoating much better or leave it to a pro for painting. If you want it to look good and last

I wanted body-color hood clamps but didn't want to ruin the stock ones, so I bought rugged ridge silver hood catches to paint

I then bought Dupli-Color Perfect Match Bright White paint:

As well as Dupli-Color Acrylic Enamel Clearcoat:

Next I thoroughly cleaned all the parts starting with WD-40, then Palmolive, then rubbing alcohol to make sure there wasn't any left-over grease.

I did not sand the parts, nor did I apply any primer.

I proceeded to apply multiple coats (4 or 5) of the white paint, waiting 10 minutes or more between each application. I was outdoors which I think was a mistake, because the wind made applying the paint evenly a challenge. Also painting all sides proved to be very challenging. Are you supposed to suspend the parts somehow so all sides are exposed for painting? Or are you supposed to do them half at a time, making sure that the partially exposed already painted parts don't get double-painted? I'm still not sure.

Next I applied the gloss clear coat. Again waiting 10-15 minutes between coats, then waiting another 12 hours for a final coat, per instructions.

The final result from a distance is not terrible:

But as you get closer, you start to see the disaster. In addition to the rough uneven surfaces and chips at the edges, notice the yellowing from the "clear" coat:

When you open the latches it's a complete embarrassment with large portions of the paint peeled off:

What are the main mistakes I made? What can I improve for a better job next time?

Automotivetouchup.com has OEM match paint, metal primer, and clear. You can fetch them in aerosol as well. Just an alternative for you and I agree that metal primer is a good choice prior to painting them.

Just saw that OP used wd40.....good G. Dont eeeever do that again. The only thing worse than oil for paint adhesion is silicone. I would suggest an automotive paint wax and grease remover. I worked in the autobody world for years and to this day have never found anything more effective. If you dont have an autobody supply store near you I know that summit racing sells their own brand. I always have a gallon of it on hand.
