Has anyone else noticed that it's hard to fill the tank completely? I was looking through my fuelly.com history and noticed that when my fuel range on the dash shows zero and my tank is on empty, I have been getting only 16 to 17 gallons back in the tank. Yesterday, when I was leaving the gas station my gauge only showed 3/4 full, so I pulled back around and ended up getting another 3.5 gallons to go in. Seems like it's really difficult to fill the tank to completely full. The pump wants to click off early. I wonder if the tank is getting air locked or something?

No problems here for me, I am currently on a little less than 1/2 and will fill up today but no issues so far getting a full tank

Couple of issues possible there...if you always get gas at the same station, then it could be a high flow situation. Most gas stations turn their pumps up REALLY high to hurry up and fill your tank and get the next transaction going. This causes a problem with some vehicles that may have a narrower filler neck. The second possibility is that you have a small imperfection (restriction) in your filler neck. I have had a recall on a previous vehicle (not a Jeep) for this problem. My suggestion would be to try slowing the fill down. Use the first click (slowest set flow) instead of the last (highest set flow). In reality, you are only saving yourself a few seconds by using the fastest setting.

The evap systems on modern fuel tanks are set up to limit vapor emissions at all costs, even if it means you don't get a complete fill. My GTI will click off two gallons shy of full if I fill up normally, so I have to switch to a SLOW trickle at around half-tank if I want to actually fill the tank.

People in backwards states like NJ don't have that luxury, though.

I don't have my JL yet but my Grand Cherokee is finicky about taking fuel. It's especially bad at Costco because I think Costco pumps are turbo-charged.

I’ve had it in various vehicles in the past. One was so bad I had to fuel it by turning the handle over. For some reason that worked

I dont have that problem, but I do seem to have an excess amount of "reserve" fuel. When I am on empty and fill up the most I have ever put in is 18.5 gallons. The gauge shows slap full. Im not brave enough to pull a Kramer and see how far I can go before it runs out.

Yeah I usually do use the first detent on the nozzle so that it fills slowly. Been doing that for years. Just seems odd how it won't go past 17 gallons no matter how empty it is. It also feels like the nozzle wants to fall out due to the angle it's at when it's filling the tank. I find myself keeping a hand on it to prevent a nasty mess from happening. I'll keep an eye on it.

another thing to consider. modern cars (most) need to have the ignition turned off, the power also, not just the engine. The venting system in most cars only works with the car completely off.

Hi WXman,

We recognize that you are currently seeking advice from other forum members, however, if you decide to get this looked at by a Jeep dealer, send us a message before your appointment.

I had this same problem for the first few weeks I had my Jeep. Every time I got gas it would only fill just past half a tank and the pump would keep shuting off. Hasn’t happened since those initial few weeks though.

Its all in the angle I'm holding the nozzle I've noticed. I can't let it rest or it will click off, and I have to hold it so the nozzle has a more downward angle to keep it from constantly clicking off.

I once had an RV with a 52 gallon tank that would only fill at the lowest trigger setting. More than once, my family could go get me a hamburger while I filled.
