There is a distinct point where the engine comes into power. 1200-1600 is where it's at if I remember right. However off the line there is a couple possibly even 3 second delay at times until the engine reaches this point. Once it's there, man it flat scoots.

I found for several weeks after getting it that I was mashing the accelerator trying to get it to react then really dialing it back when it finally kicked in.

Add the extra partial second for the ESS system Jeep plans to put on it and daily driving might be cumbersome. Get the ESS module to permanently turn it off if that causes annoyance.

Once I started to anticipate that and adjusted my driving style to accommodate. It really became a very enjoyable engine. Just the right amount of growl, grunt, and mpg. I might not have traded it for my jk if I didn't move to a 2 mile commute.

The single biggest piece of advice I can give you is don't get it if you won't be getting it up to full operating temperature often. That's when these engines really get into trouble with all their emissions equipment.

This is very helpful. To confirm, this is the older 3.0D that was discontinued, not the one that has yet to be released 4Q19, correct?

If the new 3.0D is also going to have this lag I may opt for the 2.0T in the 2019....

Indeed

That was a 2016 Ram 1500 Crew Cab Laramie 4x4.

Just talking about it makes me miss it a little.

Thank you I appreciate it.

Still don’t know what would be better at altitude... the 2019 2.0T eTorque or the upcoming 3.0D hmmm

No contest...when you’re starting from 480 ft-lbs with one, you’ve got a whole lot to lose before your performance suffers to the point of futility. Can’t say the same for the 2.0.

Thanks yea I more meant that naturally aspirated suffers more than turbo ... but the 3.0D is a turbo as well, correct? In that case I agree - no contest.

It is turbocharged, so it’ll run at altitude just fine. I believe the TFL boys did a towing test with the gen1 3.0 in the GC and found the hp hit to be a little rough for heavier loads at altitude but the gen3 should pull better in that department.

Good news, it looks like the EPA is still certifying new diesels. Potentially bad news, their beef with FCA looks to be alive and well because you can just about guarantee FCA submitted their 3.0 redesign for certification long before Ford and GM submitted theirs. We’ll see if the Aug/Sept 2019 ordering estimates for Ram 1500 and JLU 3.0s hold true. I’m not holding my breath.

Thanks for posting this JLURD. I was shocked to see a $3.8k price tag - was expecting 5-6k. Understanding of course that FCAs could be in that range.

You’ll probably be looking at $4-5k between the 3.0 option and the required 8spd auto “option”.

Just started poking about the 1500 diesel forum again.

The emissions fix on the existing ecodiesel is reportedly causing significantly more lag, performance issues, mpg losses, and a significant uptick in CELs.

So much so lawyers are starting to circle up for another lawsuit. The agreement from the settlement said no drivability, performance, or mpg hit. People are pissed.

I sure hope this doesn't parlay over to the new ecodiesel. Or worse end up causing the diesel to get canceled.

Highly doubtful based on the significant mechanical changes that went into the 3.0 gen3 and the extended R&D time they had with the (likely intentional) EPA foot dragging.

I've got a 3.0 TDI 8sp Audi and I have read all the same complaints about the epa tune that VW had to retrofit on them.
Its only 240hp/428tq with a first gear of 4.71 and a Final Drive Axle Ratio of 2.52
Base Curb Weight (lbs) 4277
BS it runs fantastic, 0-60 5.5sec 35 mpg's adv since I bought it.
yes its lighter and more aerodynamic...

I'd give anything to have that engine in a JL...I assume based on specs that the JL diesel will get great.
