I'm familiar with the ZF-8HP50, as this is the third vehicle in my direct family with the transmission. I also know that the way it's programmed in the JL sucks in comparison to other cars (specifically BMW). I have no doubt that the transmission itself is capable of awesome quick shifts, but in the JL they always seem to be a bit lacking and sluggish (not compared to a JK, but compared to other ZF 8-speeds).
FCA doesn’t use ZF’s 8HP50. They build & install the copycat 850RFE along with their own programming. That’s why they feel a bit different to you because they are different.

The 3.0 using 8HP75 will be the first actual ZF transmission in a Wrangler.

I see... I incorrectly assumed that they would build the copy of the transmission, same as before.

Are the internals of the 850RFE & 8HP50 actually different? A different transmission tune would sure make the JL better.

There hasn’t been any detailed information on exactly what or how the FCA transmissions are built different from ZF other than FCA is allowed to patent their design changes under the licensing agreement.

I can see the appeal of the 3.0 paired with a manual. It would be enjoyable to run if you can get over the NVH. But with the auto? No thanks

BLUF: Looks like the 3.0 is just a luxury that helps FCA bring down their EPA average for regulators. Net price as configured for 2.0 Turbo is more than $1,000 less than the 3.6. The 3.0 diesel does come with a few extra bits despite being configured on the JLUS

After 5 years, assuming stable fuel prices, the 3.0 would only make up about 21% of the purchase premium

Comparison taken from Jeep.com’s Jeep Wrangler configurator and assumes configuration of a 2020 JLUS with automatic transmission.

Sometimes its not about "Recouping the cost" If that was the case, you shouldn't be buying new, and just getting a used prius that was only driven to church by an elder.

A diesel drives differently, and will especially be able to handle upsizing tires better than the gas engines. A set of good 37s plus new wheels will be a few years worth of fuel cost added to the Jeep I might add...

What's the benefit of putting a diesel engine in a Jeep Wrangler?

It weighs much more, fuel is much more $$(may last longer but costs more) and to my knowledge is more "sluggish" than the gasoline V6.(plus all other small differences)

Is it one of those "because we can" things or is there a real benefit other than bragging rights??

1# diesel cost more
2# def fluid cost
3# engine reliability unknown
4# dpf filter cleaning maintenance and cost
5# higher engine cost over the other engine option

On the plus side longer range more torque equals a better off roading experience.

What's the cost of an oil change for the diesel at a Jeep dealership? Just curious. I've been told it is much higher than for a gasoline engine, but I've not confirmed that.

A typical light duty diesel engine takes at least 2x the oil of a gasoline (my 6.7L Powerstroke took 14 quarts versus 7 in the 5.4L it replaced). Diesel oil filters are also usually 2x the cost. While a diesel oil change at the dealer may not be twice the cost of a gasoline engine depending on the oil it well likely could be.
