You can purchase a weekly beach driving permit from the welcome center in Currituck for $50. That is the cheapest option as far as I know.

I think it can also be purchased online, but I got mine at the Bodie Light lighthouse south of Nags Head. The rangers are good on a conditions report too.

I think you only need a permit if you plan to park. If you are just beach cruising, you dont need a permit.

Yes, my comments only apply to Carova beach.

• Corolla/Carova - North end of the Outer Banks. No permit required to drive, but parking permits are required on the Friday before Memorial Day until 11:59pm on Labor Day. Parking permit information can be found here. This is the place to see the famous wild horses.
• South Nags HeadHatteras/Ocracoke Islands. Permit required. These beaches are maintained by the Cape Hatteras National Seashore (National Park Service). Great fishing areas!

I finally took the Jeep to both Chincoteague Island (VA side), and Assateague Island (MD).
To ride on the beach on the VA side, you have to get the $70 yearly daytime pass.
If you want to ride in MD, you pay $90 for the yearly day pass, but it includes both VA and MD. I did not find any daily options.

Anyways, the weather last weekend was awesome, and had such a good time with the kids, that I will be coming back soon.
