The complaints I hear about Hawaii
  • Island fever - after a while, you have seen it all
  • Cost - it isn't cheap to live in Hawaii
  • Medical care (especially for us older types), It can be hard to find medical care for conditions that arise as we age
That said I always love to visit and like others have said the climate is rarely an issue

My old JK has been through some cold before, but nothing like this. In Northern Colorado, we hit -18 over the past 24 hours. Went out this morning to take my trash out and saw that a windshield washer line (I suspect) burst. Looks like I know what my next repair project is.... Damn that's cold!

Make sure that’s not coolant.

What's all this talk about cold?

Last week I walked 1/8 ( One way) of a mile to the store after Blue Northern came by 15 degrees with a 50 mph wind. The only issue I had was coming back home facing the 50 mph wind it felt like someone put a blow torch on my nose and I had to cover it with my scarf to put out the flame. 🥶

We were under a Wind Chill Warning so guess I should have pulled my head out of my butt and covered my nose while walking out of the store. Jeeps sat in the warm garage.
Really not worth driving that short of a distance. My nose would disagree with that notion.

Hope you found out what the leak was.

I have some military friends that are getting moved (yet again) and they are terrified they will get station in HI. Everyone they know who has, hated it and can't wait to get out.

It's good to hear others like it.
I’ve never heard a single person complain about Hawaii. It’s the #1 pick for shore duty and very difficult to get. Plus, the COLA is ridiculous, on top of the inflated BAH. Serious money to be made being stationed there.

I can't argue that, I'm just saying what I was told. I'd love to move there and chopper tourist around myself, but my wife won't move.

Here's a video showing how to do it with the 3.6 Pentastar on a JK (it's a JK right?), looks pretty straight-forward...but maybe not out in -18 degree weather? I dunno, you seem pretty hard-core. :)

Hawaii has a lot going for single folks, but married with kids is less than desirable because the school system is not great.

-40 and blizzards are a regular thing here. Lake ice is 4 feet. When it's -13 I'm outside in my T shirt.

@jaardappel Thank you very much for the detailed information, really helpful. I will update this thread after I chase this down, but need temp to go up a bit first.

The prior comment about island fever being possible is spot-on. Some folks won't mind living on an island, but I was already well-travelled enough whilst in uniform to know that I'd feel crowded in short order. No Hickam AFB for me, thanks.
