Heck yeah get him a jeep. Lil dude is going to pull some serious poon with that thing. I'd probably recommend throwing a few cases of condoms in the back too. Lord knows at that age you can burn through a whole box in one night.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a Jk for half the price or better as a first Vehicle, yes? So why not go that route then reward with the big toy following the next milestone in life, like college graduation or something like that. Just my 2c

I’d Rather Talk Jeep’s!
Do we think this is a good idea? Not the average car for a 16 year old for sure, but this boy is for sure deserving of it. It was either this or a Mercedes but we're worried about that getting keyed (or something (the wife is quite the paranoid freak) ). Ive heard the wrangler is easy to flip which is definitely a concern.

Please feel free to share any opinions or info

Thanks.
My first vehicle was a used 93 Wrangler that my parents got my older sister and then passed it on to me. It had about 40,000 miles on it. My dad bought me a lift and tires and I helped install it.

Now that I have a son of my own I plan to buy him a used vehicle that is in good shape. I plan to do all the maintenance/repairs with him so that he knows how much work is involved keeping it in good shape. And if he doesn’t help out, then he doesn’t get to drive it.

I personally can’t see giving a 16 year old a brand new car. For me it was all about the freedom from my parents and I would have thoroughly enjoyed any vehicle.

The area I live in, and work in an area, that is full of Very Very well off people. Many, that I have seen, have bought their High School kids new Raptor trucks, Mercedes, a Viper, Porsches, Teslas, etc etc.
Most of these kids act like spoiled, entitled brats. Many do not. I have seen too many of these kids grow up, hooked on hard drugs, because of the money and accessibility of expensive drugs. Where I live, there are two high schools, one for the well off sections, and one for the average income sections. I have had two of my older children go to the high school for the well off kids. Both of those kids were spoiled, and both have their issues, because their mother was one who "Lived Vicariously" through her kids (we divorced when they were very young).
Fast forward: I have been remarried 18 yrs, and told my wife, a couple of years ago, that my 15 yr old will not be going to that same school. I petitioned the school district to change schools, and switched her before entering high school. Now, she is in her 2nd year and very happy. She thanks me for not going to that school, because the friends she grew up with are now spoiled brats, and a lot are doing drugs in that school. Mine is hard working girl, on the track teem, getting good grades. When I need help, in the yard, in the house, or anything else, she will usually help, without hesitation. Not Spoiled!!

My first car was a 1972 Vega GT Hatchback I worked my ass off after school everyday pumping gas to buy myself a car when I turned 16. When it was time I found it for sale in my neighborhood, cost me 900 bucks and got me around until I could save again for something better.

If you have the money and really want to, sure why not? Aside from the higher center of gravity and high price, it's not a bad choice for a first car. It has chunky tires and sits higher off the ground, so the chances of curbing the wheels or bottoming out on stuff are low. The plastic OEM bumpers are really cheap to replace, should your kid need to, and everything's modular and easily replaceable.

Plus if you get a regular 3.6 or 2.0T it's not particularly slow, but it's not fast either.

Definitely consider the insurance costs as well. Wranglers are probably some of the cheapest new cars you can insure, but I'm not sure how they compare to other things.

I was thinking a 4 door would handle better, but a 2 door with the back seat taken out so they don't carry people around? THAT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE WISE. Haha. But here's the flip side: If they have the 4 door, they'll be less likely to ride in friends' cars to places - which is ideal if your kid is a good driver.

Anyway...

Don't be a dick just because you didn't get anything from your parents. I didn't either but that doesn't make me any less happy about this kid getting a new Jeep.
I agree! And I bought both my first Jeep and my second one lol. Too many people here get hung up on suffer porn. If your kid is going to do stupid stuff with a car, it won't matter if they do it with a brand new wrangler or an old Yugo they bought with money from working summer jobs or whatever.

Though I _do_ agree with not buying someone under ~24 a fast car. That's just asking for trouble lol.

If/when I eventually have kids and they hit that age, I sure hope I can help them get a Jeep! That would be so cool! Especially if we had matching Jeeps!

Still didn’t exactly have a happy ending anyhow-

but at least those punks who “keyed“ it got what they
deserved..

(this has some similarities to my first vehicle in the early 80’s- haha. ‘74 Plymouth Valiant)

When you are finished extolling the virtues of parents spoiling their kids, would you mind "Passing the Grey Poupon" ? Gag!!!
I remember your original post. You sounded like a spoiled brat, because the ordered Jeeps your Mommy and Daddy bought you weren't exactly as you wanted.
Bro. Tell me you’re a piece of shit without telling me you’re a piece of shit lol. ANYONE would be pissed if the dealer ordered a completely different Jeep than you spec’d out AND you were on a time crunch. People like you don’t belong here on the forums

Just ask @cosine he knows!
OP, if you raised the young man to respect his property regardless of price, and he's shown that he's responsible and appreciative of things given to him throughout his upbringing then maybe, just maybe a new Jeep isn't unreasonable. This assumes that he's had good driving training and will continue to learn how to drive this vehicle under supervision until you feel he's ready to take the wheel without you (or someone you trust to help him along).

It would be very wrong IMO if you just got him the new Jeep, threw him the keys and just said "you've been a great son, here's your reward" and then just let him drive off. There is a learning curve to driving a live axle vehicle and in inexperienced hands could go very wrong, and this doesn't include doing anything offroad, that's another skill set almost entirely.

So if you do this you need to put in the work to be sure this turns out to be a good move.

Also, that post earlier about a base 2dr w/ seat removed and a manual transmission is a good one. If you get him an automatic, at least remove the seat (and make him earn that seat as time goes on).

You sound like a good dad, but make sure he knows it's a gift w/ some limitations.

I am cracking up after reading this.

40+ people just got trolled!!

Forget the Jelly of the Month Club, this is the gift that keeps on giving.

Pro-tip: Before wasting 20+ mins of your life constructing the perfect insightful response to such a preposterous question...check the stats on the OP first. If they joined today and its their first post, then chances are someone is trying to light fire to see how many people throw gas on it.

I'm willing to bet dollars to donuts that it is probably an older member with a Smurf account.......well played, Sir/ Ma'am.

The righteous indignation is indeed quite strong in this thread. You can cut the “holier than thou” with a butter knife.

If you can afford, I think it is a wise choice. A gift like that will be remembered for your son's lifetime.

I think you're right. But honestly this has been a pretty fun thread to lurk either way
