What type of radio is everyone running? Should I install a CB or GMRS radio in my Jeep? Do I need both?

Everything is basically GMRS now. Jeep Jamboree and many off road parks are exclusively GMRS/FRS now.

GMRS. The “license” is cheap, no test, 10 years and covers immediate family.

I personally find the quality better than CB.

If I understand this correctly, GMRS radios require the user to have a license from the FCC. Correct?

If so, does anyone have a link to where you apply? I've been all over .gov sites looking for it.

Thanks!

UPDATE: Found the site, entered my FCC registration request and am now waiting on the FCC so I can apply for the GMRS license.

GMRS will be superior to CB in every way for local and trail rides. More power, Frequency Modulation (FM), compatible with bubble pack radios, repeater capable.

I also have a Ham ticket and run an Icom IC-2730a in my truck. It is capable (if needed) of comms across the VHF/UHF spectrum.

Jeep Jamboree and Midland are all over the GMRS switchover. Lots of options out there and a 10 year/$35 license makes it all legal. Enjoy.
