Left Kansas City around 11am and made it to Amarillo, Texas around 8:30pm. Only made two 15 minute-ish stops for gas and restrooms breaks along the way. I don't wanna hear anyone say the JL can't handle a road trip much less daily driving 😅. But I do appreciate a good steak house near the hotel. It sure beats the beef jerky and Dot's pretzels I'd had on the road.

I've got friends in Roswell, NM so I'll be camping there tomorrow and then headed over to Gila National Forest and swinging back up thru Santa Fe before heading home again. My work told me I needed to burn almost 160 hours of vacation before the end of the year. I'll still be rolling 80 into next. So, I cut the Utah/Colorado leg off a trip that I was planning on taking in the spring. I really didn't want to risk going up into the Rockies alone this time of year. Never know if/when snow could roll in.

Had a cool meetup w/ Kyle on his travels from Missouri down to New Mexico and back. Was great to see his very cool Rubicon and talk some Jeep stuff. Look forward to meeting up again, maybe on the trails next time!
Safe travels back home Kyle and keep up the good work!

Roswell was a ton of fun and I have far more pictures than I'm sure the board allows. I had lunch with a friend that I used to skate with in KC and now works conservation in NM and her husband. I love that the town has fully embraced its weirdness with the UFO thing. After hanging out with blnewt for a bit I threw down a tent at Bottomless Lake. Unfortunately, the rain never did move out as they had predicted and it was still sprinkling Tuesday when I broke camp. My plans had been to continue on to Gila National Forest for some stargazing but the weather there looked like it could be problematic with the cloud cover so I went to my Plan B which I'll cover in the next post.

So, Plan B took me back into Texas to Palo Duro State Park. And that place is absolutely gorgeous. I will, without a doubt, be going back there again. I camped down on the basin floor and once the sun had set but before the moon rose the clouds had cleared out and for the first time in my life I saw the Milky Way with my own eyes. That had been a bucket list item for a long time. I won't insult it by posting my camera phone's feeble attempt at capturing it. Heading back east instead of pushing farther west did shave a day or two from my trip but I'm good with that after seeing that sky.

Does anyone know who makes this?

Gah. I remember seeing those for the JL when I was doing my research. Lemme dig thru my notes and see if I can find them again. I want to say it was a company called Underground.

I bought my first new Jeep, a yellow CJ-7, in the summer of 1977. This thread inspired me to see if I could find one like it for sale. As it turns out, there are several on the market — for about 8 to 10 times times what it cost new (or about what a 1977 Porsche Carrera cost new in 1977.) A jolt like that really puts inflation in perspective. In 1975 one Million dollars was a lot of money.

The half-doors are a great look/fit on the 2-door. Makes it look like a TJ. Given what an old CJ costs, I think I’ll be shopping for a 2-door JL sport.
