I’ll say it from the start - i don’t have a ton of mechanical experience. i can change oil, brakes, coolant, diff, and flush brake fluid, etc but i can’t do timing chains or make dinner.

I took out over 4.5 quarts of ATF but could only put in 3.5. The trans temp was at 102F for the last portion of the fill. I imagine you guys will say to not worry much and watch the trans temp as it seems as if some JLs are shipped low to begin with however I’d like your opinion? perhaps i should try and top it off at 120F? will my JL blow up into a fiery ball of flames as soon as I hit second gear??? any thoughts?!

second thing… if you do this, get the same gasket it comes with. i thought i had, but mine was rubber whereas the original is fiberous and stiff with indexing pins making it easier to install.

And yeah, if you added a qt less than you took out you'll need to add more. I'd bet that if you checked the level after driving it a bit you'd be back down a qt.

Did you turn off the ESC, and also run through 2nd gear at 2000 rpm as well? There's quite a few detailed steps that are easy to miss unfortunately.

On the Ram forum, where these trans have been in use longer, there are discussions and service procedures posted stating the transmission -not the vehicle- should be leveled. In other words the rear of the vehicle elevated so the transmission case flange where the pan mounts is horizontal. Might want to check into that.

I did the things suggested above ie second gear 2,000 rpm etc, however i didn’t jack up the back (and probably won’t do this). i was able to put in another 1/4 of a quart with the temp at 122F for a total of 3.75 of 4.5 or slightly more taken out. i’ll continue to watch it and add more in the future if possible. it sounds and runs as per it’s norm.
thanks for the replies! keep them coming!
