Changed oil before heading out to watch our 10 year old granddaugter play hockey and could smell burning oil all the way there - about 40 miles. Checked underneath not seeing anything leaking. Head home and about 10 minutes into the ride home still smelling it. The next thing is a message on the dash regarding the Auto Start/Stop System, with the symbol and then check engine light comes on. Needless to say it was a tense ride home. When we got home, my husband checked the oil filter and found that there was no oil on the dip stick and the o ring had broken. Retrieved the old o ring from the trash put it on the filter, then used the oil we bought for my husband's Ram 3500 to put in the jeep. Check engine light still on but the psi is maintaining at 30 psi. Not fun to do in sub zero temps outside at 6 p.m. in the dark.

@agpthng

I have been following this forum fairly closely since 2018. This is the 1st post I have seen where someone had an issue with the o-ring on the cartridge filter failing.

Was the o-ring used overly cold when placed.. Had it been sitting /stored in a very very cold garage?

Did whomever did the oil change, lubricate the o-ring before placing it onto the oil filter housing cap?

Did they over tighten the oil filter cap when they put it back on?

What brand was the cartridge oil filter with o-ring that was installed?

What was manufacture date of the cartridge and o-ring?

Has the product been sitting on a shelf in the garage for a few years... time enough for o-ring to feel negative effects thanks to heat.

.

It was fairly cold - below 32 degrees when the oil was changed.

It had been sitting in a heated basement.
The o-ring was lubricated before putting it on.
Didn't over tighten.
The brand is Mopar.
Was just purchased a week before.

Responsibility is on the installer.

Temperature is not going to matter....

Please inspect parts for defects prior to installing....and check for leaks and proper operation prior to driving.

As an aside... you mentioned using oil intended for your hubby's 3500... was this the same type of oil you use for your JL?

sounds like the oring didn't get seated properly on the oil filter cap and got pinched..curious how much oil it took to fill it back up or if it was drained how much came out...
We think by the time we got home, it had just about all drained out according to the dip stick. So it took a full 5 quarts. :(

This post isn't about the individual who changed my oil, just the fact that the o ring broke, and thank god for the idiot lights that let us know that something was going on. We didn't just run it out of oil.

All good now, after putting in what oil we had, went and bought more oil and just drained it and refilled the oil.

not to be critical but it kind of is. when you change oil you should let it run until the engine oil is warmed up and then check the filter and drain plug for leaks...pretty standard stuff for people who do their own maintenance and even if having a shop do it that should be done by the owner/driver before it leaves the lot. If your jeep was 5 quarts low by the time you got home you probably did some damage...

And that's exactly what we do and have been for 40+ years. This is the first time the o-ring has let go after we drove it.

I always start it up and check for leaks before closing the hood. Not saying you didn't or that this would have saved you, but good practice. It does sound like it got pinched.
