Oh!... and NOW I wonder if the dealer will tell you that putting the CarLinkIt behind the dash has something to do with something. LOL. So... make sure and remove that...

Dealers are very good at excuses. LOL.

I have to go wax my hinges with the hope that they don't rust.

I put some spare clear bra material over all the leading edges of my door hinges after getting the first big rock chip. Took me a few hours to cut all the pieces and apply it, but it's held up well and no more dings/rust.

Do you, by chance, know the firmware version you have? Some people say that they update fixes the issue in the console. JeepCares won't do the update for me OTA and is forcing me to go the dealer... so I've been waiting because I already know that the dealer visit is going to be a disaster, even with Jeep Corporate backing me.

Now... if you tell me that the update was done and you STILL have the reboot problem, I'll do the dash deal. I already have the parts. Just been putting off because I secretly hope that the same company that can't keep paint from peeling off hinges is going to get this right. LOL.
I just had the update done on my 7" unit, it made no difference at all. The CarLinkit still reboots randomly in the center console USB port but is rock solid in the dashboard port.

We already went down that path. I'll play it out.

Here's how it goes.

Go to the dealer, and let them try to fix it. Make the appointment far out enough so that you can message JeepCares so that Corporate can let the dealer know (hopefully) that the vehicle owner doesn't want the dealer to ruin the vehicle even more.

Fast forward: My understanding is that the dealer will not be able to actually fix the center console issue and will say that the console USB is only for charging...

You MIGHT be able to get an update for your 8.4, but that might or might not break something else.

Still need to go to the dealer to try and let them fix the reverse camera lines that disappear.

Sorry for the negative-nelly on all of this, but let's face... some people are fine paying $40k+ for a vehicle with features that don't work. And that's great for them.

Others. No.

Hi Peter,

I understand that you haven't had a great experience but we'd like to help! I took it upon myself to pull in our previous private conversation and look into your concerns for you. Although we tried to arrange additional support for you before, we can absolutely get a case escalated on your behalf if you'd like extra assurance while working with your dealer. For your convenience, I've included a snippet of the TSB 08-133-21 that calls for Uconnect software to be updated to level 39.6 and aims to address the following--

SYMPTOM/CONDITION: Customers may experience one or more of the following:
•Lost radio presets.
•SXM favorite song not displaying/playing.
•Radio display screen is black, intermittent.
•Radio freeze intermittent.
•Incorrect navigation address/location/directions.
•Bluetooth pair or connection issue.
•Radio channel change by itself.
•SXM icon inoperative.
•Backup camera has black display screen.
•High pitch chime noise.
•Contact list not loading.
•Device not supported message.
•Remote app inoperative.
•Travel-Link fuel price incorrect.
•Backup camera gridlines missing.
•Unable to adjust volume.

In addition the following enhancements are included:
•Heavy Duty (HD)Truck USB HUB improvements.
•HD Truck heated steering wheel improvements.

Additionally, due to a specification from Apple, a modification was made for the JL/JT vehicle lines to allow the center console USB port to use CarPlay, beginning midway through the 2020 model year. This change was made at software application level IR22.5 and is applied to any higher software levels. Some 2020 owners may be able to use Apple CarPlay from the center console port (2), while others may not. Although we do not have control over this configuration, you are more than welcome to submit feedback on Apple's website.

If anyone has questions, please send us a private message!

Thanks,

Courtney

I have a new 2021 JLU Sahara that was ordered in July 2021 and delivered in September 2021. So I believe I should have the latest software levels.

As others have reported in this thread and elsewhere in this forum CarPlay is rock solid from the front dash USB. The issue I have when trying to use the center console for CarPlay is odd. If I'm just using Apple Maps (iPhone 12 Pro iOS 14) or Apple Music or one of my streaming music apps all is well with the center console. However, if I try to have Siri send a text message or I make/answer a phone call then CarPlay disconnects every 10-15 seconds and has to reconnect. ?????

I contacted UConnect originally at the beginning of August regarding the latest UConnect update. I was told at the time that they were gradually rolling it out and that I should see it by mid August, and to contact them if I did not receive it by end of August. I did not receive the update by end of August, I sent an email to my "case manager" at UConnect on 9/5 - nothing... I left a voice mail with my "case manager" at UConnect on 9/15 - nothing, I left another voice mail with my "case manager" at UConnect on 9/27 - nothing, and I have sent another email to my "case manager" at UConnect today. I took my Wrangler in on Tuesday this week for service updates, and specifically asked them to update the UConnect system... they told me that that update did not come up for my '21 Wrangler JLU and that they could not help me. So, at this point, I am beyond frustrated since no one that can help will help. I consider both the dealership and UConnect useless.

Yup.

Don't worry. You are not alone. I have @JeepCares offer to help me also. I sent images of my system versions, etc. Then -- I was told that they can't help, I have to go to the dealer (which we know is going to be a waste of time) -- then I find out that it DOES come OTA. So The @JeepCares contacts me again to find out my firmware, system data.

It's very frustrating because it's clear that they are just ducking and dodging.

The only solace I found was that I got the post-purchase survey on quality, etc. It was pretty comical. I felt like an idiot. $40k+ for a vehicle and I got better support on my $28k VW (I thought VW was the bottom of the bucket with support)...

At some point I'll lose my patience and play the stupid "go to the dealer" game. Then the vehicle will get lemon'ed. Because if I was REALLY picky there are about 10 things on the vehicle that are wrong and 9 of them will never be fixed correctly.

Just send my OTA update and cut the nonsense.

We'd like to look into your specific VIN to see if there are any recent TSB's/RRT's that may be applicable to your vehicle. Please send us a private message so we can look into this for you.

Hi there,

As our teams are focused on the social media aspect of customer care and are not equipped to provide assistance via telephone, we kindly recommend calling 877-426-5337 if you'd prefer to speak to a Jeep Customer Care Specialist, directly. It's important to note that if your previous Case Specialist placed you in a queue to receive an upcoming software update, then you will no longer receive responses from that Case Specialist. If you ever experience concerns while working with them, please don't hesitate to reach out with your VIN and/or case number.

Our @JeepCares team reaches out in an effort to create a more positive Jeep Brand experience and offer additional assistance throughout dealer visits, if you decide to pursue a more immediate download and would like our support. An informational TSB 08-100-21 [Rev B] was provided in reference to receiving software update 39.6 via FOTA, since you expressed hesitation in visiting your dealer and these updates are rolled out in phases.

We recently fell upon comments about your ongoing concerns and wanted to confirm that your software status was the same. Since you have not yet received the FOTA update, we kindly advise that you visit your dealer so they can update your infotainment system and ensure that your FOTA updates are properly aligned. We took it upon ourselves to follow-up with you privately and offer our assistance since TSB 08-133-21 addresses this same software update 39.6 from a manual, dealer-download approach.

Thanks,

Courtney

Good afternoon everyone,

Our teams have been looking into these concerns further and would like to ask if anyone has had the opportunity to update their phones to software level iOS 15.0.2? If so, are you still experiencing concerns with your center console relaying intermittently? Apple aimed to address CarPlay concerns in their most recent update.

Thanks,

Courtney

I wish I could tell you. I got fed up and installed it a different way and now it works great (dash USB). It still acts funny sometimes but is far more stable than via the console.

I have the the beta even of iOS 15.1 beta 4 and the center console USB (via Carlinkit) still reboots. I think this is clearly a hardware problem with the port.

Since I have measured the USB voltage to be lower out of the center console, I suspect that is why the Carlinkit reboots there and not in the front panel USB. I am going to go out on a limb and suspect that the wiring to the center console port is perhaps too small of a gauge and causes enough of a voltage drop that is causing the reboots. I am contemplating re-wiring that port with better wire as a test someday.

I concur with this. There is something hardware related Either the plug itself or the voltage (or both).

I *can* tell you that the little behind-the-dash modification that someone here posted is fantastic.

Courtney,

Are you saying Apple aimed to address THIS CarPlay concern in their most recent update? If you've just read about Apple addressing CarPlay issues in their most recent 15.0.2 update then that's NEW issues with CarPlay that were introduced with the JUST RELEASED iOS 15.0 I'm still on the very stable iOS 14.8. In fact I've read on other forums that people across all sorts of car models have had huge issues with the just released iOS 15 when they'd had ZERO problems with iOS 14 in their vehicles previously. I've read about so many problems that I have no intention of updating to iOS 15 for some time.

PLUS I THINK IT'S WISHFUL THINKING AT BEST or at worse just being naive, to think the Apple is going to solve a CarPlay problem when those of us who are experiencing it only have it happen in the center console and it's rock solid in the dash port. The only thing that changes in that scenario is YOUR PORT - why on earth would you think that's an Apple problem?

I'd wager that if you asked the dealer to "fix" the console issue you would end up with the removal and replacement of everything from the radio to the console and much more... which will yield you three things:

1) Time paying for a vehicle that you don't have.
2) Issues that you didn't have before (loose plastic, broken clips, things that no longer work, etc.)
3) The same problem with the console USB not working.

IMHO, it's just not worth. I'm the FIRST guy to take the "No! I want it right!" position, but in this case, I think it's an instance of asking a pigeon to be an eagle. The dealer is the pigeon, and you're expectations are that they are an eagle.

Or... I can think of a more polite way to phrase all of that:

Has anyone actually had their console USB go from not working to working properly with CarPlay?

I still find it strange that the Apple Car Play in the center console had always worked fine for me. I would think that it would be consistent in working or not working. It worked fine before the latest UConnect update for me too.
