Really it is just a personal choice lots of folks in my area still use cb radio to stay in touch while in the outdoors, GMRS has more range and clear reception but at a cost.

I do a lot of hiking with the family and GMRS are great for that. I really don't have any CB buddies anymore (used to in the old days) ;) so I'd probably go GMRS if I was to install one in the Jeep.

Has anyone come up with a good auxiliary speaker/location for their CB or Ham radio?

I'm working out the install details for the Icom 2730 ham radio and think I have most of my issues solved with the exception of where to mount an auxiliary speaker. I'm planning on installing the main radio unit in the front passenger foot well or behind the glove box, while the control unit would be located above the rear view mirror using the Trigger 6 Shooter Remote Mount. I just need to get a decent sounding speaker into the cabin and mounted so as not the be in the way or interfere with anything else.
I mounted mine in the dash so it fires through the fabric behind the steering wheel. Works great. Invisible. I also set things up up so I can easily swap between a Midland MXT115 GMRS and Uniden CMX660 CB Radio installed in the console. Here's a link to my build thread:

CB over GMRS.... umm it's still somewhat more popular though that may vary by location and they don't require a license.
GMRS is better than CB is pretty much every other way.
One advantage over GMRS is that CB is more fun when you listen to "Convoy."

I've been looking at all these great installs.
Does the tailgate really have good grounding, or does it need an additional strap?

Awesome, thanks for the pics.
I've got a President Bill CB on the way and an assortment of Firestik parts. Going to mount the antenna to my Arctec spare tire delete.

Hello guys,

I believe this is the best place to install a HAM radio. I am using ICOM IC-2730a in this installation.

Below are some of the benefits
  1. Not taking and space in the windshield
  2. way above so it is not disturbing
  3. neat and almost factory look
  4. easy access
  5. visible

Where and how did you mount the main radio body?
