I was wondering if anyone has gone up Painted Gorge and up Carrizo Mountain since the big storm a couple weeks ago. I am planning to take a small group of jeeps up there the first of October, and was wondering if the jeep trail is still passable. Thanks in advance.

Hey Mike, my suggestion is to call whatever ranger station is local to it. I couldn’t get updated info on trail conditions for Coyote Flats so I called the rangers and they confirmed the trail had been closed that morning and would remain so. ☹

Edit- Ok, checking and it says it’s BLM land and it’s under the El Centro Field Office (760) 337-4400

Please let us know how the trail is, or update the reviews on Trails Off-road!

Many thanks. I am planning on taking a run out in a couple weeks and check out the trail. If the trail is washed out as you leave Painted Gorge there is a second way in. I will check that one out as well. About 30 years ago a group I was with rebuilt the trail with huge rocks.

I’ve never been on that trail. It looks good, I’ll have to take my family down there once it cools down a bit. Thanks for the bookmark!

Carizzo Mountain is a fun out and back trail. You start inside Painted Gorge at about 200 feet in elevation and wind up the mountain ending up around 2400 feet. The trail is closed from January 01 to July 01 for bighorn sheep. While not really difficult, this is a true shelf road with drop offs of around 1,000 feet. Absolutely no room for errors. Up by the top is a really nice valley you can camp that overlooks the desert and an truly amazing sunrise. Enjoy. I am planning on doing this run oct 07 with a meet up at the ocotillo exit chevron at 0800. It's going to be warm with temperatures in the upper 80's.

I tried getting out there August 26 and not too far after the gate it started getting a little sketchy, it was only myself and one other jeep, and it was gonna be 105 so we decided to turn around. Definitely had a lot of water go through it! If it would’ve been cooler and we had more time we would’ve tried to continue on.

Thanks for the info. The only place I am concerned about is where the trail heads out of Painted Gorge and up the mountain. If that is washed out I will take the long way around and tie into the main trail just above the washout.

I wish I would’ve been recording my tracks on OnX that day, but I didn’t. Here’s a pin https://maps.app.goo.gl/s6CTNtwts2gxXhy69?g_st=ic that takes you to Google maps of where I believe it looked like it was going to get difficult. There is a couple of large chunks that fell off from up above, so it was a tight line going to the left and we didn’t go past that point.

Thanks for the update. This may be a interesting run.

Got a pin for the gas station?
Sorry don't know how to pin. However there is only one exit off I8 into Ocotillo. Heading west on the freeway take the exit and turn left, maybe 1/2 mile or so the gas station is the only one one the right. If you are heading east, again take the Ocotillo exit and turn right. The gas station is on the right side of the road. We will be gathering just before the gas station in a parking lot.
